BROKEN GEAR FOR HIGH SCHOOL PHYSICS?

Hello All,

I am looking for broken climbing gear that I can use to show my junior/senior science class when teaching about Newtons laws and forces after Thanksgiving Break.

I have a bunch of cool functioning gear that I will bring and have them calculate forces on, but I also wanted to have some gear to show what can happen when these forces are surpassed.

I love using climbing examples and it gets the kids more focused/excited to do physics when it is something they can touch and see and relate to in the world.

Please shoot me a PM if you have any busted stuff you could part with. Being a teacher I don't make much, but would gladly pay for shipping if needed.

Thanks in advance!

Dan

REVERSO 4, self-braking belay fail at 16.82 Kn

I could send you this. I don't have the top piece that is missing in the pic though. I'm still not sure where it landed. I think its great because the split side resembles a piece of airheads candy ripped in half.

I have a working cam you can add to your class, if you want it. I live up in Boulder.

Its called a Smiley's Mighty(???). I acquired a while back, used it and found a serious design flaw while in the middle of a multipitch, namely the thumb loop issue in the second photo. I would love to hear if anyone knows what a Smiley's Mighty cam is.

Smiley's Mighty cam

The thumb loops works...kinda.

Hey Dan, I have some broken stuff that I could loan you. I use it for educational purposes too, so I'd want it back. And I'm in the Boulder area.
PM me if interested.

CTB, that is quite a failure! I'd love to get ahold of that guy and have PMed you my
address. What a belay device to show!

Eliot, that would be great! I'm thinking of offering some extra credit for the
kids if they want to build a machine to test cams to failure. It'd be cool
to grab that cam to show them. I'm in Broomfield and could meet up sometime
on Friday or this weekend before school begins again Monday.

Mark, that'd be cool to borrow some busted gear. I've PMed you also.

Thanks in advance and have a great day!

David,
That'd be great to grab from you! (Hope you're OK after taking those fat whips!) Meet you in Boulder this weekend?

Hey dan I teach physics as well, I don't have anything to add to your cause, but I was interested on what specific things you will do with them.

I would like to include climbing into the room more

We should have kept that orange TCU I ripped apart a few years ago! I'll ask around, Danimal. Someone is bound to have something.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
