Anyone in or near Columbia SC want to go on a day trip to NC on Friday or Saturday this weekend? I've been gym climbing for a while now and am eager to go check out some of the top rope spots relatively near us.

Hey Chris, I'm down in Augusta, Ga, and I might be free either Friday or Saturday (unfortunately I won't know until Thursday night) for a trip up to Asheville or something else. Hit me up if you ever want to hit some areas around here. Im assuming you're ok belaying? I normally use a grigri.

If you want to top rope, then you want to head to Crowded Mtn...sorry, Crowder's Mtn State Park. There really isn't an area with as many top rope routes anywhere near Columbia. Rumbling Bald doesn't really have any routes you can top rope, nor does Pisgah, most WNC routes must be led before you can set a top rope anchor.

As far as toprope options go in North Carolina, the Chimneys area at Table Rock in Linville Gorge is the classic spot, but Rocky Face State Park near Hiddenite, NC also has toprope access. Rocky Face is your best bet, since it's 2.5 hours from Cola.

The chimneys area sounds great. I've backpacking there and loved it. Is there easy top rope access (no lead needed) with establish anchors in that area? If so, could you give me some info on where?

If you drive 2.5 hours to climb at Rocky Face you are going to be disapointed. Chossy quarry. Crowders has its share of choss too but at least it is real rock formation and not chipped blasted sharp and loose. Well maybe it is a little but I would climb there any day over Rocky face.

I mean thats true, but you have to weigh what you want for your toprope experience. Rocky Face is an old, overbolted quarry, but it has bathrooms and zero approach. Plus it's not that crowded. If OP wanted a "real" rock experience Crowders would be great, apart from the 30 minute uphill walk, crowds of people and 3-4 toprope routes there at the main area.

Chris Hart: Yes, there are old huge eyebolts up there, so big that most people don't even back them up. There are two walls, that main Chimneys face, which is right on the trail, and the Gold wall, which is a little bit recessed from the trail. To create anchors for the Gold Wall, you might have to sling a few natural features, although there is a 2 bolt anchor on the right hand side of the top. To get there to to the Table Rock parking lot, and instead of walking up the Table Rock trail, walk the opposite direction towards Chimney Gap. You'll get there in about 10-15 minutes if you have a steady pace.

I'm sorry but the approach to crowders is not bad AT ALL. Go to crowders. Good top rope access and it's close to you. Plus, that 30 min of uphill will help burn off some of that Thksgiving turkey. Cheers.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
