Gunksgiving?

I have a couple questions regarding going to the Gunks for Thanksgiving to see how reasonable it is as an idea.

My friend and I would be leaving NH late on Tuesday night, arriving somewhere in the early early hours of Wednesday. We'd hope to catch some sleep and then go climbing forever.

Is the MUA still a reasonable place to camp?

Is it likely to be full by the time we get there?

Can a car be driven up to a tentsite so that one or both of us could just sleep in the car?

If we're looking at climbing for the 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, and half the 29th, should we just buy annual passes?

Any and all information would be gladly accepted. I've been there on one other trip and climbed at the Trapps, the Nears, Lost City. It was incredible. If it is just going to be a shit show I'd rather find climbing elsewhere, but the Gunks is the Gunks so I'd love to go.

I did a Gunks trip for a weekend last year around this time and had a blast.

MUA is still open, I don't think you'll have any problem finding a spot midweek.

Cars can't be driven directly to the tent sites, you park and then walk down a short trail to get to the sites.

Pricewise the costs of an annual pass and day passes for five days are equal so I would go with the annual pass, in case you decide to make another trip sometime in the year. Also more convenient.

Last year we had high temps in the 40s, as long as it's sunny out the climbing is comfortable from around 9 to 3 and certainly doable earlier/later than that if you're okay with some suffering. Despite it being a weekend with sunny days the cliffs were pretty much empty, we climbed 3-star classics all weekend without a single line. Have fun!

I have climbed Thanksgiving in the past at the Gunks. Usually empty on Thanksgiving day, not as crowded as normal Fri-Sun. Some years though it can get really cold and others easily warm enough (with sun). YMMV, weather will have a huge impact on what and whether you can climb.

Ditto on the MUA being a fine choice during the week, weekend is anyone's guess. The colder it is the more likely you'll have the place to yourself.

Does the MUA ever "close"?

Thanks for the details! It's starting to look like a plan!

Hey guys, I have been looking for people to climb with in the Gunks. I have been climbing for 2 years. But have not climbed trad yet. So I am looking for people to take me up some low grade climbs. If your willing please let me know. I would like to start as a middle man. I can supply a 60m and a 70m rope.

It's hit or miss last thanksgiving planned on climbing on black Friday but woke up to 10 inches of snow.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
