Here's a few 1 minute clips of some marginal at best gopro footage. Not trying to be cool on the internet or anything; videography just happens to be like climbing... its just another fun hobby.

I've been thinking about getting one just to take still images with. I had one of those unbreakable waterproof cameras for a while on a biner on my rack, but I broke it.
Sometimes I just want to capture the beauty of the rock and scenery, shoot me. But I have no intention of ever using it for actual video. I just like that it's TINY, takes some pretty good pictures, and is really durable.

I got a Gopro as a gift myself and think its a really great tool. Maybe we should turn this thread into a climbing with a gopro tips and tricks just to chap some lips. :)
I like it!

I've found that having the follower wear the Go Pro you end up with good video of the leader. Plus you can edit small bits of the second's footage of them climbing in with footage of the leader to show a different angle. I've also used the holder with the suction cup mounted to my roof to video road side ice. The result was video that wasn't shaky plus it far back enough. I think that's the problem with Go Pros. It's that the cams always too close.

I think those are just fine - can't even really tell that they're from a GP. The key though is that they're not on the climber, the camera position is stable and relatively non-moving, and most importantly they're not POV.

have one i use for motorcycle racing. really useful device for analysis of technique and lines. don't ever take it climbing or use it for anything else i do.

i don't have the time or inclination to edit down to tell a story, but hey... whatever floats your boat. people that do it well make some really inspired art. people that don't are probably still having fun and i don't have to watch their stuff.

Go boarding at Baker with a Gopro and see what kind of reactions you get. I bought one and quickly realized how lame it was to dick with electronics instead of enjoying my climbing and snowboarding. It was returned to Backcountry.com shortly after. This guy ain't missin any more wicked face shots just to try to get a recording of my wicked face shots. A-FUCKING-MEN! "Is the red light blinking, brah?"
I used Go Pro footage to show friends that they could ride different trails in Whistler Valley, Squamish the bike park and Pemberton. I showed them Spanky's Ladder too. They were convinced they wouldn't make it after watching skiers slip fall then slide past so that kinda backfired.

What happened to pics or it didn't happen?

I remember climbing with some French Canadian at RR once. I don't think Canadian YDS ratings are legit because there seems to be a pattern with Canadians I've climbed with and shock and horror with what I consider pretty tame ratings.

Anyway, somewhere in Quebec there is a micro SD card with hours of footage of someone French Canadian Freeing several pitches of 10b with my ass in the distance up above.

Does your arm get sore from patting yourself on the back? Or do you do mobility exercises for your rotator cuff to help with that?

I mean, to be fair, you have a fucking camera sticking out of you head. It's ridiculous. Not to say that this should dissuade you, I still rock my pink tights even though they are silly. I am still greeted with snickers and jeer when I rock the sock with flip flops. You should just embrace and enjoy said ridiculousness. I will continue to rip on you and giggle afar.

GoPro is generally not as great climbing as it is skiing or sailing or swimming with dolphins but it does have its place. I think the coolest thing of all is that I can go out shoot video relatively easy compared to my DSLR, come home and edit in an hour then send it to my Grandpa who is 91! I mean honestly how cool is it to give someone half way across the country a quick view of something that would have been deemed "impossible" during 75% of his lifetime! Below is a quick edit of Ancient Art, when it's not 100% POV it works pretty well.

I find they take pretty terrible footage of rock climbing, first person doesn't convey the scope or excitement of moving over the rock, whereas with ice climbing, the footage of swinging tools is fairly interesting for a little bit.

At the end of the day, I like filming all sorts of climbing activities so I can share some piece of the experience with my friends and family who don't know what it is I actually do on my days off, and I really don't give a damn about what other people think.

Then why are you filming it?

As much as I love climbing, it's just about the most boring thing to watch. I can't imagine how boring it is to someone who doesn't understand what's going on. It takes a lot of skill to cram-pack 2 minutes of action into a 30min video.

While I respect your intent to point out contradictions in my use of language, you are missing the mark here, and I'm sorry about that. Your goal is cute and somewhat entertaining. And please, keep on keeping on (do you have a kickstarter? I would donate for sure)

But..

If I cared about what others think I would never choose to wear a go-pro climbing, because there is that stigma of it being a bush league move.

If I, were to say, loved my friends and family, I would want to share my life with them.

The first is an expression of love for myself. The second is an expression of my love for the important people in my life, and a respect for their interest in me as a thank-you for the times they've shared their life with me.

Taking something I say seriously...are you serious? These forums are for talking shit when the weather turns to shit (it's snowing).

But in all seriousness, GoPros are turning into the next vacation slide show, only longer and more tedious. There are exceptions, but I think that's what Banff is for.

GoPros should mainly be used for couch racing

I haven't used mine for climbing. Only on a surfing trip to Fiji to reflect back on. If I put it on my helmet, it'd be for still pictures and panorama videos. But, honestly....what do you guys think about using them to analyze your own climbing technique (or for someone new, to teach)? Weather that's for hand/foot technique, pro placement or just to observe how smoothly you climnb. I've been teaching my girlfriend how to climb and have thought about using a GoPro on her helmet to help her improve on things I can't see from the ground. Your thoughts.

There was some POV gopro video I actually watched an entire climb of. It was like 1/2 hour long too.
It was some climb I had doubts if I could do, the info on it was kinda vague, and I was unsure of the protection. So I watched a guy climb it and put pro in and got a feel for the climb and it gave me some confidence that the pro was okay and it wasn't horribly runout. I think it was some climb in the ADK with a forever approach.
