In the Utah National Parks Council (and likely other scout councils) every scout group that goes climbing, rappelling (or does something similar) must have at least one Level II instructor and at least one other Level I or Level II instructor. Otherwise the BSA's insurance policy will NOT cover you.

The National Parks Council is holding a Level I & II instructor training, with a limit of 16 participants. Below are the details:

When:
November 4th (Wednesday), 6pm - 10pm
November 6th (Friday), 6pm - 10pm
November 7th (Saturday), noon - 8pm
November 12th (Thursday), 6pm - 10pm
November 13th (Friday), 6pm - 10pm
November 14th (Saturday), 9am - 5pm

Cost: $150.00 per participant

Location: NE Lehi (UT) (info will be provided when you register)

For information about registering for this class, please contact Scott at 801-358-1627.

Really? $150 to take the course? You should be paying people to take the course since they will have to put up with taking scouts climbing.

I paid $500 to go to National Camp School for a week to become a Climbing Director. Add in the $670 in air fair to get to Camp School and it was about the most expensive way to go.
My certification expires in Dec.
I'm thinking of doing the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor instead for next time.
The $150 isn't bad, and most of it will go into the Council pocket.
Up here in Idaho, things just don't run very smooth. It's nice to see things function in other places.

Bump for the Boy Scouts. Glad to see they're requiring some training to take scouts climbing. Good organization and I have good memories of being a Boy Scout (I wonder how many people will chime in here to criticize and insult them)

I got my climbing start in 1994 with the BSA. Its been over 20 years, I've climbed a ton of mountains, a ton of rock, a ton ice, and in a good many places. I've met a ton of good people.
It wasn't till 5 years ago I started taking scouts out to give back.
I like to think of Scouting, the Government, the School system, firefighting, the military, and organized religion all in the same bucket. At the core of all these, on a basic foundational level, there is good intentions and good purpose. Somewhere along the way, compromises were made, red tape stepped in, and ego started to take away from those foundations.
I try to not throw the clean baby out with the dirty bath water. Some folks only see the dirty bath water.

Thanks all for your interest in this course. The registration is now closed (the first session was last night). A full class is 16 participants and 25 showed up! The instruction requires a 4-to-1 participant to instructor ratio, so they had to scramble to add more instructors to accommodate everyone, but they did it. I'm looking forward to a great course.

If you are interested in a future course, the next one is scheduled for April 2016. You should be able to find more information on that course in February or March at utahscouts.org.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
