The closest options are Pilot Mountain for decent local sport climbing...Moore's Wall (Hanging Rock State Park) for good trad and bouldering.

If you are coming from the Gunks you will really enjoy Moore's Wall. It is the closest climbing area to you. Moore's also has great bouldering. Asheboro is another great winter bouldering area that is probably the closest to you.

Don't rule out Linville because of the drive.... I just returned to MA from a trip there and it was one of the best destinations I have been too. Free camping, lifetime of routes, amazing rock features and the locals were very helpfull and friendly. It's kinda like a bigger, wilder more alpine version of the Gunks.... With no cart road, fewer climbers and more exposure!

I lived in Chapel Hill for a while and thought it was a pretty nice place as a climber. Year round climbing. Good day trip options and good weekend options too. You probably won't be climbing after work or anything like that, so plan on a full day for the most part.

Day trips: Asheboro, Moore's, Pilot, Stone, Cooke's, Ship Rock
Weekends: LInville (Hawksbill, Table Rock, Shortoff...), Rumbling Bald, Looking Glass, and New River Gorge

plus a few option a little farther but really stellar like Laurel Knob and T-wall.

Now that Sauratown is open during the winter months it is another great day trip option. NC has a huge variety of climbing just in the Piedmont alone not even counting all the other great options in Western NC.

Between Hanging Rock State Park (where Moore's Wall and Cooke's Wall are) and Pilot Mountain, north of Winston Salem. Check out the Carolina Climbers Coalition website for more information and for the dates they are open as it has had limited access in the past and is on private camp property and only open with agreements with the CCC. It is one of the few real sport crags in the area and is mostly steep quartzite sport climbing. It stays very warm in winter.

Here are the dates for Sauratown:December 1 to March 31st. It is the the "mountain" in between Pilot and Hanging Rock. Great rock and climbing... There is great trad and sport climbing at Sauratown.

No dogs allowed.... puts me out. I would be willing, of course, to have him stay in the van while checking the place out, but I respect a "No Dogs" rule meaning no dogs. People who have no dogs deals don't want to see a dog even in the van.

Thanks for respecting that rule. The access is through a YMCA camp and the no dogs rule is part of our agreement, that would include no dogs in vans. Hopefully you can find someone to watch your dog while you check out the cliff.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
