thinking of heading to lander area next week for the first time. weather looks a little iffy mid week. Any recommendations for one vs the other? Any difference in weather between the two canyons? better van camping at one or the other? Sport climbing. Thanks
You're psyched either way! Wild Iris is about 2000 Ft. higher than Sinks and the temperature is around 10 degrees colder. Wild Iris' Main Wall gets good sun exposure, as does Aspen Glades and the rock is certainly amazing. Sinks boasts some excellent steep climbing and is really good most evenings if it's still hot and superb on partly/mostly cloudy days. Judging by the weather next week, you're looking at Sinks mainly, and Fossil Hill boasts rock that is similar to the Iris. There is great free camping in both places, but in sinks it is a little underground. Head past the Geology field camp and take the next left. Totally free forest service campground and the lower paid campgrounds have water. Make sure to get a burger at the Lander bar! Have fun!!!
Everything is pretty much IN-season right now. Was at Sinks yesterday afternoon/evening and it's down jackets for belaying in the cave for sure. Shade there after 2 or so. Iris is sunny all day. There are other areas too...
The new Lander guide is at Wild Iris Mountain Sports in town...just came out this summer and has every area in the greater Lander region. It's gonna be perfect everywhere the rest of the week! Have fun!
