The baby needs to be bathed

Anytime my hands turn black after a rap or if it gets in the mud.
No specific time frame.

If you replace your rope every 6 months you probably never need to wash it.

Never - I think it is a waste of time.

Not even just to see your beautiful rope look young again? I guess it's just a preference.

Apparently you have never looked down to notice your hands completely black after one belay then.

Anyway, I wash it whenever it seems like it's overly dirty, which is probably about twice a year.

Whenever I get the opportunity to use a bathtub. Or when it gets hard to see the middle mark because it gets too black. which ever comes first

I washed mine with an approved soap and it was nice and tidy for a few weeks. Shortly after, my hands were completely oxidized again. Maybe food service gloves are the way to go when belaying. We all know that true climbers never wash their hands.

Only when I can't see the middle mark anymore...

I tend to just buy a new one when it gets dirty.

My beautiful new Sterling is NASTY and I was thinking about giving her a wash, but then I decided I rather go climbing or for a mtn bike ride.

The whole process takes about 5 mins of my time - 4 mins to chain it and put it in the washing machine and 1 min to unchain/flake it onto a towel. I don't use soap.

I do admit its kind of a pain tho, but I believe it helps keep dirt out of biner hinges over time and helps keep our hands from getting black, so its worth the 5 mins to me personally, but ya, def a preference.

Your belay device/biner are probably old and grooved. Or your partners may be.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
