Damn the dirt bag dream come true. This is a great nation where even the poor can rise up and be someone. The land of opportunities.

I think it's funny that to the media he's a busboy first and "mountain climber" (no, he's a rock climber) second. Why are they defining him by his (former) day job? Gripes with media coverage aside, congrats to Isaac on achieving your goals and winning a cool mil!

So next year will we see Honnold, Caldwell, ?!?
Seems like the odds are def in a climbers favor

Actually that would be funny as heck if a bunch of professional climbers pushed out the goofballs who show up year after year with their crazy obsession.

Congrats Isaac!

I hate the formulaic storylines they present for everyone and wish they'd shorten them. They were probably ecstatic to get the one competitor crying about the death of his mom and I felt like a creepy voyeur from how long they lingered on his welling up tears. Sure, give a little back story for the competitors but move on to the athletics!

I hated the formulaic storyline on the guy who lost his mother & grandmother too. They did a better profile on Issac showing a bunch of bouldering vignettes.

USA Today probably used the term busboy because ANW also focused on that job in his profile.

Congrats to Issac!

I wonder what he's going to do with the money (maybe upgrade his camper?) and if he's going to propose to his girlfriend...

p.s. rock climbers do the very best on ANW. In last season's US vs. Europe vs. Japan the rock climbers from Europe dominated and got the win for Europe.

I just looked at the SLC coverage of this and they call him a professional rock climber. This probably makes up for that nasty fall he took when he fell off the Psicobloc wall in the rain at Park City month or so back.

Not going to lie, I was rooting for Greg. That guy is so chill, happy, a full time job, dad, 38, crushing it. Wow. And the professional climber only beat him up the rope by 3 seconds! Good work to both but Greg gets my hats off.

Nope. With all due respect to their climbing ability, Isaac is way way better in the style of climbing that translates to ANW. Shit, I'd be willing to put money down to go head-to-head against those 2.

Calling Isaac a professional climber is a bit stretch/misleading. Dude is definitely sponsored, but he sure isn't making a living solely (or even mostly) out of it.

Congratulations to Isaac. Good to see a climber get it - but wait; he's one of the best climbers in the world! You gotta love TV though, no?

I wouldn't be surprised if they change the course now to handicap the climbers - maybe a blank slab? Sorry.

Look guys, according to the show, he's the only contestant that "solos V5.14 routes".

Of course he won it.

Congrats to Issac Caldiero!

Those vignettes break up the repetition of run after run. Help to engage the audience. I'm not a big fan of them, but they are a necessary evil to broaden the audience appeal. Core fans would endure, but the fringe audience more likely to tune out after a few episodes.

I hope one day I can be added to the short list of v5.14 climbers haha! I was wondering if anyone else caught that!

That announcer hadn't a clue, but I think the guy said one of the only "climbers" not "contestants"? Must be some kind of nomenclature only the badasses can use for not-so-tall solos?

Solo? V11 highball? Pretty damn impressive regardless of what you call it.

Just so we're clear, I wasn't bagging on his ability, I found humor in the tv person's description.

That being said, 25 feet not really a solo, is it?

Christian RodaoBack · · Tucson, AZ · Joined Jul 2005 · Points: 1,486

Yeah, I've seen about 3 of those ANWs, and one happened to be the one w the V5.14 comment :-)

Whether it's a solo, not qualified to comment..

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
