What are camping options outside of the park? Also, what are the must hit areas for a first timer?

Wheeler's is a great option if you're looking for a quiet place to get some sleep. It's really close to the park, has a reasonable selection of gear available and nice, clean amenities. If you're looking to whoop it up all night long, then it's probably best to look elsewhere.

Mirror Lake State Park is goregeous, and only a short drive to Devil's Lake. It's usually WAY less crowded and often has sites available when DL is full.

Green Valley is another option, and though I've never stayed there, I've never heard any complaints.

If it's your first time at DL, stick to the East Rampart. The East holds the greatest concentration of classics, is easy to find, and there will be folks around to offer up beta as needed.

I've stayed at Green Valley a couple times. Nice campsites - bit of a commune feel. The owner will probably hug you.

Haha. I've had similar experiences there.

Also remember getting a stern talking to about having guests arrive after hours.

Nordic Pines Resort right outside of the park entrance usually will have openings if the park sites are full. I usually stay here it's easy to get in and out to go to town or to west bluff and east rampart. No reservation needed, no hassle.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
