Have any of you done any buildering? If so, what has been your repercussions from the cops (if any)? Are there any direct laws, or are they stretching things just because they think it's wrong? I saw the article in the latest edition of Urban Climber and am curious.

The only real buildering I've done was at the CU Boulder engineering center, but it's practically encouraged there. :)

I've done quite a bit of buildering back in Michigan during my undergrad. We were caught by the cops on numerous occasions. They always just watched and said be careful. The only time they got upset and threatened to arrest us was when we were caught rappelling from the top of a parking structure. Apparently free soloing is ok, but as soon as you incorporate a rope, it's frowned upon. I've done a little buildering on CU campus, but haven't had any run ins with the law out here.

The newest Kohl's have really great pillars that are easy (5.4) and interesting because you can stick your mug in a camera when you get to the top and give the security people a heart attack. Just make sure you have a careful escape route planned.

Don't do any buildering in Las Vegas. Most of the buildings here have false fronts.

My boyfriend, being from Boulder, Co. was used to climbing on real brick. It was funny to see his face expression when a Styrofoam-like brick broke off in his hand, as he tried to do some buildering on the side of a restaurant, here in Vegas. Poor baby.

December mid '80s Tommy Deuchler and I attempted the 40-story Pillsbury HQ in Minneapolis. Cops pulled the window out at the 17th floor. We paused, negotiated, then smoked our only joint we brought with to celebrate. We climbed in after negotiating no charges will be filed. The lesson is if you get caught, you can negotiate your way out but only BEFORE you come in.

I have been buildering tons of places. (every rest stop building on the way down to Texas from Wisconsin) out in Vegas, to many airports across the nation. But i have a bunch of buildering problems here in Madison, WI and just a few weeks ago i was out with some friends climbing down town campus area and we wernt hassled at all. Even a few professors and a bunch of students watched and walked by. I have never had any problems with buildering.

I've only been buildering in a handful of places, mostly at CU. At the CU Engineering Center, no one will hassle you. But if you try to climb any other buildings on campus, you'll probably go down hard. I've heard of campus cops pulling guns before.

FYI: there's a picture in the front of the latest Rock & Ice of a guy buildering on a CU Engineering Center stairwell.

I get "escorted" off the campus here on a reg. basis! "They" are alright,it's been explained to me that the security must make an impression,a visual that apeases the general public, but there are never any charges,so that's good! It's like that Wiley Coyotey cartoon where the sheep dog and coyotey are punching in and out of "work"....we both know our roles and it's usually good.

IANAL, but I think only the DA can make a charge/no charge deal. Cops have been known to say whatever they want, including - gasp - lying, to get their perp.
