Camping at Tramway?

Hi,

Has anyone ever camped at Tramway? We want to do two days there and would be nice to camp instead of paying for a hotel and riding up and down the tram multiple times.

But, not sure what to do with our camping stuff when we are climbing. Def don't want to lug it around with us, but not super enthused about leaving it unattended.

Anyone know of any solutions? Just leave it somewhere remote? Is there somewhere to stash it, like the ranger station?

Thanks!!
Jen

You can camp at Round Valley, which is a backcountry campground about a mile and half away from the boulders. The sites are really dispersed and actually kind of hard to find, but fits what you're looking for. Get a wilderness permit at the ranger station by the top of the tram and be aware that it fills up on the weekend.

Hi,

You can camp at round valley and hike back to the boulders. You can't really back country camp near the bouldering areas as this might jeopardize access since camping in these areas is prohibited. I've camped at round valley and hiked back and forth from the boulders. The hike isn't too bad and serves as a good warm up.

Have fun.

Thanks for the replies-

Round Valley sounds good.

Sounds like you both were pretty comfortable leaving your gear there during the day unattended?

It's the backcountry. People leave their stuff in camp (in the tent) to hike to the top of San Jacinto, etc. May be a challenge to bring camping stuff and a pad though. May just have to go with a couple of ensolites as a crash pad.

Really? Things don't typically get stolen with regards to backpacking...who wants to carry more stuff around?

Keep in mind that you do need to get a wilderness permit to camp at Round Valley. I'm finding all this out since I'm planning to take my kids on a little backpacking trip up there this summer and they only process permits by mail and suggest that you submit your application several weeks in advance. You can only camp in improved sites too, and they can fill up on many weekends, so plan accordingly.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
