Climbing in Colorado, late June early July. Recommendations for a traveller?

Hello there!

I'm a climber form Spain who will be working in Ohio in June and having a week off after that. I've been doing a bit of research and seems like Colorado is one of the best places to climb in summer in America, right? So I'm thinking about flying over to do some sport and bouldering. I've got a few questions.

-Is it easy to find climbing partners around? Is this forum a nice place to find partners of would you recommend me another one?

-Where to stay? Seems like Boulder is the place. Is it too far away from Rifle?

-Any other area in America that you'd consider to visit at that time? I'd already been in The Red and The New (too warm now), Yosemite (too crowded and BIG) and Rumney. It looks like Colorado has one of the biggest crag concentration in the US.

Anyway, hope you can give me a hand on that. Looking forward to climb with some of you.

David

I would say Shelf Road or Rifle would be good bets for sport climbing. They tend to be pretty hot though. Independence Pass is my personal preference but the snow may not have melted out by June. Keep posting looking for partners, doubt you will have a problem finding someone to climb with.

Boulder is probably three hours' drive from Rifle, not easy for a day trip. There is a big climbing community in Rifle, so you might be able to crash on somebody's couch as well as acquire a partner (or several).

There's quite a bit of sport climbing within an hour or so of Boulder, too: Clear Creek Canyon, Boulder Canyon, St. Vrain, etc.

In late June, it shouldn't be prohibitively hot (yet). Have fun!

You may want to also check out Maple Canyon and the Uintas in Utah, or Wyoming crags such as Ten Sleep that time of the year. As for Colorado, Devil's Head, which is SW of Denver has many nice sport routes, a pretty location, easy camping, and is at a fairly high altitude.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
