John I think a more accurate analogy, in this particular instance, would be that ya shouldn't have to stop poppin caps off your porch if ya want to...just to let the Sunday drivers meander by.

Do not get me wrong, we were not pleased with the goats, but they were well...goats, and goats do in their house what goats do in their house. One should expect goats in some places.

BHMBen wrote:The goats were the better example, John. Potshots with a Glock? Lil' melodramatic. So you think human beings are no more responsible for their actions than goats? I think even a redneck would probably not be happy being lumped in with goats. JL PS -- I used the Glock in my example cuz I don't have an AR.

Rather I think the goat would be insulted to be lumped in with the rednecks

Goats are fine livestock...smart, faithful, versatile, and sure footed. I'd rather be lumped into such a category rather than with the typical climber of today.... Actually, I equate the boulder throwing and 'baccy-spittin' much more closely to a goat kicking rocks off. And, believe this, I can certainly be classified as redneck so I feel I have some authority on the topic. Again, we done been here for a quarter of a century. It just sort of happens....naturally. If rednecks get near a cliff, the edge of a bridge or building, or up a tall three....things go over the edge. My observation is that 90% of the time, maybe more with males, they will spit over the edge, throw something, or otherwise be tantalized by the heights. It's as ingrained a cultural anomaly (Ref: Richard Dawkins/memes ). Ever been to Rock City in Chatt? The Vulcan statue in Birmingham? Sunset rock?? Go and observe. But, more importantly.... Why don't you have an AR, John? That's not right.... Come over soon and we'll shoot.... Not at passer's by.... Definitely not at livestock... And probably not at climbers.

Culture clash!
Objective hazards, Tafraoute
Beer bottles are one thing, big ol' rocks are another. Them boys ought be ashamed of themselves, and probably would be in a private moment. Maybe not when you charged up on 'em though.

Culture clash? Wildlife... This fellow right here kicked a rock on me in Scotland? (a long time ago) Did I chastise him? No. Should I have? No. I took a picture and registered the threat... And, then.... I went for beers and blood sausage in the hillwalker's inn at the entrance to the glen.... In my diesel minivan... The only difference between here and there? It's rednecks instead of goats.... My diesel is a 2500HD and not a minivan. And the climber's here are, apparently, gentrified enough to worry about an equivalent experience. A similar experience I had, in a land far-far away, in the presence of my baby brother, his girlfriend, and my wife, at the time.... Point being....

Climbed at Yonah today. No goats. No spittle. Just friendly hikers and dirtbag climbers. It's safe to go back in the water

Mark beat me to it. Shared the mountain with every other user group imaginable from The Sierra Club type hiking parade to the people of the Cleveland, Georgia Walmart...and everything in between. Everyone escaped relatively unscathed. Cornholio was nowhere to be found.

I was up there too, what a coincidence. There was no trouble at all, well except for the part about leaving my rock shoes hanging on the wall in the garage. I did see something I've never seen at Yonah before; there was a Tesla automobile in the parking lot, it was cool.

digital badassness Jeff......this should be a hard variation to Digital Delight....maybe up the nose of the prow! What I do to mitigate the risk of dodging jettisoned objects is place a sign that my friend made for me at the top of the climb(especially Punk Wave). It's color and font mirror that of a state park sign. It simply states that there are climbers below..today. While this isn't a cure all and in some cases probably encourages trundling, it gives other folks at the top a reason to speak up when they see this behavior. I live in Tallulah and climb primarily in the Gorge. The people above me are most often the tourists. I don't believe I have more of a right to be there than they do. I do believe that I should do what I can to mitigate the risk for myself. As for Yonah, yes those kids have a right to get up there and do their thing.....so long as that doesn't include endangering others. At that point, it's our responsibility to speak up. My friends and I have gone so far as to station a "lookout" at the top of Lucy when climbing to ensure our safety. Sure..it's less than optimal, but better than coping with the potential injuries from thrown objects.

accesswdun.com/article/2015… Updated info on yesterday's fatality. Doesn't seem it was a climber unless someone recognizes this name. I don't.

I've split off the posts on the accident at Yonah to a new thread in the Injuries and Accidents forum. Please post comments there. JL
