Go with guides or get rest of gear...

Carter, there are as previously stated both pro's and con's to both. I'm a huge fan of safety first, so if you can't find an experienced, patient, trustworthy mentor, then go with a guide (many local climbing gyms offer day classes etc. such as Portland Rock Gym, Edgeworks in Tacoma etc.) which are typically in the 100-150 range for outdoor classes, not guided tours.

Depending of if money is a real issue, get the guide/professional classes, and buy gear as you find deals or develop a need in the future. Don't underestimate the ability to obtain climbing gear through gifts either. For small gifts and stocking stuffers, Carabiners and slings. Large gifts come in sizes and shapes like cams, guided trips, or rope.

Be careful and selective if you go the mentor route as many very "experienced" climbers have a tons of experience doing things the wrong way. While they may still be alive to teach the wrong way, it sure doesn't make it the right way!

Cheers and enjoy your trip!

Jason
