I am, for better or worse, moving to the SA area in a few months. I have researched the area a bit as far as climbing, seems most stuff is up by Austin (Reimers etc), Enchanted Rock, and of course, EPC to the South- am I missing anything?

Whats the gym scene like? Having trouble finding any good looking gyms online...

By far the best climbing within driving distance of San Antonio is in Mexico. Brush up on your spanish and head south. El portreo chico is the only place I've been but there are a number of other places in the area that supposedly offer equally excellent climbing.

Paul,

I feel cursed being here in San Antonio (SA). Austin has several decent gyms but SA has nothing (WTF?). There is "The District" which is a bouldering wall. Reimers in Austin has short sport and E-rock has 20-30 foot cracks. Very sad for someone who grew up climbing in California and Washington state. Worse part is because TX is so big, it takes forever to get out of state. Go south my friend.

Hmmm... That's disappointing... Ever been to the lifetime fitness in SA... This website describes it as having a 'big climbing gym.' Hard to believe, but possibly I suppose

I live in San Antonio. There isn't much climbing. I toured Lifetime fitness about five years ago. The climbing wall there wasn't anything great. Think cruise ship.

The District is in mid-town San Antonio for bouldering. I've been there a few times mostly on weekdays. They have a route setter and he seems like a good guy. Most of the routes have dynamic finishes.

Enchanted Rock is about 1.5 hours away. Lots of run out slab and some short cracks. It's a nice park but don't go on Saturday. They get crazy busy and often close. There's bouldering scatted around the park.

Next nearest climbing is in Austin or down in Mexico. If you ever want to meet at Enchanted Rock let me know.

E-rock...

100+ foot triple cracks (5.10 and under)
90 foot crack Fear of Flying (5.10+ offwidth/layback)
50+ foot crack Little Feet (5.9)
250+ foot face (Dome Drivers 5.7)
Beautiful in the spring

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
