recommendations for tent repair?

Hi all,

I have a tent which works fine except that the zipper on the bug screen door has failed and needs to be replaced. Seems a shame to jettison a whole tent just for a broken zipper. Can anyone recommend a place for a repair like that?

Thanks,
David

The Gear Doc in North Conway fixes that. I know it's not close to New Paltz. Maybe a road trip?

This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but it looks like they're making a stop in NYC in May. Cool idea.

That IS a cool idea...although from reading the page they seem not to want to see my Sierra Designs tent, just Patagonia clothes. Plus, this zipper is something like 9 feet long (more?)...I think it'd bring their operation to a standstill for hours!

Always looking for an excuse for a road trip! Have you used their service?

Yes, Rich has fixed the zipper of my old EMS Headwall and a pole to another. He's also fixed a few jackets and a trekking pole. It's always a great job, no drama.

He's on White Mountain Hwy same side as IME about 1/2 mile down and across from the Irish restaurant. 603-662-4690. I would call first as Rich isn't always on the shop.

Thanks, contact info much appreciated, 'cuz I wasn't finding him with Google!

Also, I think I'm going to give this a try first

$13, shipped (versus who knows how much...it does look like a really time-consuming and picky job), and seems as though it may potentially fix the problem.

Mail it to the manufacturer? Call them first. It may be a warranty repair for free.

Thanks Max...I scoped out their repair page and they actually specifically say that they don't do tent zippers...which I think I would say too if I were them: this looks like it would be a total bear to do properly!

That's a great thought. I think I'm still going to do my Fixnzip thing mentioned above (unless someone has used one of those and thinks it's crap) just because it seems so fast and simple and probably the whole fix will cost less than shipping the tent for repair. But you're right that it makes excellent sense that the company that actually sewed it together in the first place would have the proper setup to do so again! Sierra Designs' website describes their warranty as "guaranteed to withstand appropriate use", and I'm guessing I've slept in this tent something like 80 times...doesn't seem all that extreme in terms of usage.

Thanks again, good suggestion...
