How to value used gear?

A friend of mine has a barely used 60m mammut tusk and 7 Petzl spirit draws. He only used this stuff once and then essentially quit climbing. My sense is that used safety equipment devalues really quick, even if only used once. If the market value is around $390, what's a fair offer for the set? Keep in mind this is a friend, not some unknown on Craigslist.

A personal call. I'll pay up to 70% of retail on fairly new gear which is in excellent condition. Out of production stuff around 50%.

IMO. a tusk is a hard to wear out rope if it has not been abused.

The age of any soft good also has a big bearing on the value. An unused rope - slings, etc that is several years old may be getting near it's life expectancy sitting in a closet. Even something like cams may need to be reslung if older, adding expense that should be considered.

It's also hard to go on a starting point of "retail value" when a quick google search may bring the same item up on a sale price equal to or less than that 70% number referenced above.

Retail pricing means nothing. What counts is what current sale pricing is. Internet search gives you a quick easy baseline, then discount due to used status, age, wear and tear.

Draws: google.com/search?q=petzl+s…

Also check the for sale forum here. I know I saw spirit draws go in the last few days

Stuff like draws will maintain value pretty well, especially Spirits which are pretty popular. Ropes less so, but honestly if a rope is stored properly it will be 100% fine even after 4 years in the closet. I'd rather buy a new rope than one from a complete stranger, but from a friend I'd trust their word that they didn't store it in a wet basement or hot car trunk for weeks. I'd say $100 for the rope and $10-15/draw is pretty reasonable.

I bought a 70m Tusk on sale at Bent Gate last fall at 30% off or so. So I would use that price as a starting point rather than retail

I would say between $205-220 depending on how generous you want to be. The rope can be found for $175 new on sunny sports.

he's your friend, buy him a beer and borrow the stuff. if he's like my friends you can continue that until the stuffs worn out. just make sure it's good beer.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
