Hey all, I think I left a GriGri II and a locking carabiner at the bottom of Miss Conception. I remember having it at the bottom of the climb and think I may have set it down before I started climbing. As an urge for empathy, there was a horrible accident on Sand Felipe that day and we rushed down to help out however we could. I think I just didn't do a very thorough check when we packed up during the ensuing calamity. Please contact me if you found it or if you've been in the area and didn't see it. Will probably try to hike out this week to look for it.
It was a rappelling accident. Where the fallen climber lay, he had just one rope in his rappel device. It looked as though he hadn't cleaned any draws from the route, so my guess is that he only had one rope in his atc (other may have not been looped through his locker) when he weighted it and that was all. There are of course other possible scenarios like he rapped off the end of his rope or that he was rapping with two ropes and the ropes came untied, but they seem less plausible given the draws all still on the wall and the distance he fell. I only heard a large crash that I thought was rockfall. My partner saw the last 50' or so of the fall. Again, I don't know exactly what happened, but that's my best guess and that's what the paramedic who happened to just finish Triassic was thinking. It is a tragedy. Here are some links. As far as we could tell on the scene, his brother was on Frogland, not actually climbing with him.
