UCR (iverside) is little known but close to endless climbing, cheap everything, and has it's own climbing gym OR you can join Hangar 18's network of gyms and you get a pick of a ridiculous amount of locations (membership is at ~$30 a month to access all of them)

Here's all the local crags in cycling range:
-mt rubidoux bouldering
-riverside quarry (tall tall sport)

30 minute car range
-big bear crags (~20 areas on mountainproject, hundreds of routes overall)

1-2 hour car range
-all the other Southern California crags including Joshua Tree and Tahquitz with thousands of routes between them.

UCR also has a great variety and percentage of students of color as well as students that get great financial aid from what I've heard.

Colorado Mesa University is the place for you if you love climbing! We have the Colorado national monument 20 minutes away, Unaweep canyon 45 minutes for great multi pitch climbing, and escalante canyon only an hour away for some Indian Creek style sandstone crack climbing. We have it all and more!Plus an Outdoor Program that is second to none! I started out at Boulder as well and basically had the same experience you described. Check out CMU, you wont be disappointed.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
