I am thinking about organizing a cleanup at currahee mountain to remove some trash, restore some trails, etc and I am looking for help. PM me for more info or if you are interested in helping. Thanks!

Are you aware of the Currahee Cleanup Project? They have a FB group and organize trail days all the time.

Post up if you get something organized. I'd really like to do something with the hill washing out next to Pepsi

Posted this under your post under Curahee...

Have you tried to organize it with the SCC or is this just an independent trail day? You may get more participation if its organized by the SCC and you lead the trail day? There have been trail days organized here in the past, but they always seem to fizzle out slowly.

Brad is correct about the history of proposed trail days at Currahee. Most of the trails there are in great shape. The trail from the parking lot on 184 could use some sawing. You would only need a simple handsaw for this work. I've been meaning to pick up a new one to do it. I doubt you would need a trail day for it. The gully by Pepsi is getting bad. It is still passable, but could really use some large rock steps. As far as trash cleanup goes, it is pretty unsustainable until they close the road to the top. It is good to get a few pieces of trash every time you visit. I have been seeing a lot of climbers from Toccoa College up there lately. This seems like the group to get up there to knock out the gully steps. I think this is low on the SCC's list of to-dos.

The Brick Wall area is in need of a chainsaw. There is a large pine tree, that has been trimmed back some, sitting on the ledge at the top of the wall. Some other pieces have been cleaned up around the base but this area could use a bit of work as well. The other major projection that needs to be done is bolt replacement/update. I am talking about a one for one replacement in the slab area. I think most of the hangers could be reused but the bolts could use an updating. If someone (SCC?) provided bolts (and possibly hangers), I will provide the drilling.

A buddy of mine and I did that pine tree at the top of the brick wall years ago when the branches blocked that entire left half of the face. We left the large trunk up there for fear of destroying the base. Just this year someone cut down a live pine tree behind that old dead fall. Not sure why they did this, but then trundled the whole thing to the base. So now there is that giant pile of pine branches behind Jeep Streak area. I am not sure that the trunk needs to come down. You can easily walk around it. I would agree with 1 for 1 hardware update. There are many rusted bolts on the slab wall. I figured with the low angle it didn't matter too much. ASCA would be another good contact. There are lots of those bolts floating around the SE.

I usually go in and lopper/saw the trail from 184 every winter. I hadn't got to it yet this year. There are some really big trees that fell down last year that I didn't completely clear because I needed a chainsaw.

Before ya'll start rebolting the slab routes, please be advised that I'll take care of mine. Those include Stranger than Friction, By Gully, Buzzard Breath, Tail Feathers and that stuff on the small wall.

The bolts on those routes are all Rawl 5 piece non-stainless with SS hangers. Yes they could use updating but those are approx. 7000 lb test bolts when they are new. I'm pretty sure 1/3 of that would hold most slab falls so I don't see a rush.

Stranger really needs a bolt added where that big block came off a few years back. I've had a couple of folks mention that now and I have to agree.

Where does stranger need another bolt? I never saw the block and have led it several times. Seems fine to me the way it is now. Not to mention anyone can TR rehearse it.

Since we kinda already hijacked this thread talking about bolts...

I'd like to nominate a new bolt be added to the slab face on the lower part of Buzzard Bait.

As Jody has pointed out, this climb is really an R rated trad route. Everyone including myself, is clipping the first 2 bolts of Ripcord along the arete at the start. This makes for some potentially dangerous falls if you blow it.

If there was a bolt out on the slab below the 1st vertical section (where you can finally get some small gear) I think this would improve the situation.

The FA is "officially" unknown. I've heard a rumor it might have been the Jordan's?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
