Never been over there, curious if anyone had any info on when the snow usually is gone? And how packed does the camping get? Looking at going in March/April, really need to reserve spots or can one just show up?

March / April there still might be snow here and there. I would not worry about a site that time of year as it will be cold enough that few will be visiting.

How cold is cold enough people don't visit?

You can usually drive up through the park most of the year, they usually keep it plowed through winter (will be muddy and icy though). The snow melts off between April and June, all depends on the snow year.

Between June and September you'll definitely want to reserve a site at least few weeks in advance. Outside of that you should be able to find a free campsite.

There is free camping on blm land just south of almo. Take the main road south past the city of rocks turn and hang a right after the second cattle grate.Pick a spot!

We were there over thanksgiving and the road was NOT plowed. We could drive most of the way through but that was because the wind had blown the majority of the snow off the road. Your best bet is to call the City of Rocks office in Almo and ask for conditions. Also the gate was closed going through to Oakley so check on that as well. I was also there last spring break (Mid March) and the first day was gorgeous followed by a huge windstorm that night and hail/rain/sun the next day. Agree with previous posters you wont have any troubles finding a camping spot but definitely keep an eye on the weather as your trip approaches.

Anecdotally, some of the local climbers told me they consider the season open in early May, but you can get snow anytime in June. It was crowded with few spaces in mid June in the campground 2 years ago. If you are planning a trip more than a couple weeks a season pass is the way to go.

I climbed on the Comp Wall at Castle's last Friday. Very little snow in the valley, pretty much perfect climbing temps in the pm. More snow up at the City.
Very beautiful with the snow on the peaks and dry ground in the valley.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
