Hello,

I am interested learning about any areas of the Midwest that have or have had farmed ice for climbing. Knowing the area, history of farming how it got started what were the obstacles etc. are things that I am curious about.

And, how many farmed climbing areas are there in the US? Anything outside Ouray?

I have been in contact with some people about Sandstone,MN, but if you are not one of those persons and have a story to share, please do!

Post here to share with the community, of if you're secretive:

I had to go visit my ex girlfriend's douche bag family in Plymouth, Indiana last winter. Everything was cold, flat and frozen. Every time I drove past a grain silo all I could think about if how pissed I was that it didn't look like this:

Sicelo

If you go to this dude's website, he actually wrote a book about how to do it

There's a guy on here that was talking about a free standing tower that they formed ice on in Chicago last winter. Can't remember who though, sorry

Another place to look into is the ice pit (now closed): mountainproject.com/v/the-i…

And there is a small handful of silos in Iowa and Illinois that farm ice. Not aware of any in Wisco.

Yeah, bummer about The Ice Pit closing. I only climbed there once and it was rad.

Never, got on a silo, but I'd like too.

Thanks for the responses, keep 'em comin'!

I've been farming ice in my backyard since I started climbing ice 5 seasons ago. It is a lot of work, but fun to have and quite the conversation piece too! Haha.

I have a photo in this thread. mountainproject.com/v/how-t…

I don't know much about how it's done elsewhere, but my knowlegde had c come from trial and error. Feel free to PM me if I could be of any assistance.

I operate a 50' ice tower at Big White, BC. We have a wood structure that we run water over at night. Check out our Facebook page for pictures (tinastin adventures). I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

Be sure to message me and link us up to see your article when it runs. Our 'Nice Ice' facility began as an experiment that has turned into a very successful and predictable thick solid tower of ice for 5 winters now. We just have to begin when the temps are just right to start the freeze process.

I actually cooked for them or ate out. And stayed in a hotel. They aren't good people.
