CT New Zone?
|
Mornin' Folks... I was doing some browsing this am on my maps and came across a zone in CT that appears to have quite a few cliffs in addition to at least 1 boulder field that appears loaded. |
|
Morgan, If you look at those areas in Bing Maps Bird's Eye view it doesn't appear that there are any cliffs there. Just steep hills. BTW I recommend Bing Maps Bird's Eye over Google Earth or whatever it is that you are using. |

All the green showing is in fact rock. Whether it's vertical, slab or overhanging is what remains to be seen. Army Corp of Engineers helped me locate the LiDAR layer. There's noting else like it out there for topo mapping. And btw birds Eye was soooo 1990's!!! I actually still use it but as a verification tool to this map. That said, the E/W views in this area on bing were taken during the foliage so they're basically useless imo. |

Pic of cliffs and boulder field below them: |

I've come home and looked at many cliffs on Bing and Google after actually being there only to find you can barely see them or they look flat and/or chossy. |
|
Mobes we still gotta check this zone out... looks like an incredible amount of boulders and cliffs! |

But conversely, I've looked at cliffs on Bing and Google that looked really promising only to find them flat slabs or 15 feet tall. There is no way around hiking out and relying on the old school technology of eyeballing them. Hope they turn out to be fun. My friend found a cliff in CT that we have been developing that I can't believe no one has found until now. It is apparent by the vegetation that no one has been there in the last 20 years. So there are minor but fun cliffs still out there. |

Brian wrote:So there are minor but fun cliffs still out there. And some major undeveloped ones Brian... We just did a new three pitch route a few weeks ago. And what about that last photo I posted? huge cliffs and massive boulders. I would venture to guess your lack of 'goods' correlates with your lack of A LiDAR scan of the state! Bing is great for fumbling around maybe you find something maybe you don't...with LiDAR it either is or isn't. They won't all be huge winners, but they're pretty much all winners with some amount climbing. |

I mean that there are no Ragged Mountains lurking in the woods of CT undiscovered. Take photos of that "huge cliff" once you get out there. Okay I'll have to try LiDAR. You buy stock in it? ;-) I climbed outside in CT today. Mid-50s. |

I'm game. Back in CT till Feb. |

And there are definitely some ice routes in Peoples State Forest and American Legion State Forest FYI |

Chris Nischan wrote:And there are definitely some ice routes in Peoples State Forest and American Legion State Forest FYII recalled someone posted those forests and thought I might as well take a look. Seems there's actualyl a lot of rock up there and I would bet it could be a good ice spot. Though I don't see any N/NE facing rocks. |
|
I want to go climb secret CT rock too! |
|
I went last winter to look for some of the ice routes. Found a couple but not much, we didn't really explore that much though. There's definitely potential for all types of climbing. We ended up climbing this pillar to find that it was TOTALLY DETACHED at the top, pretty much a stalagmite of ice, it was a little scary. |
|
Finally an area that isn't too far away for me to check out. I've driven past this area hundreds of times and thought there might be "something". |
|
Haha well it can't be much of a secret DMadison if I'm posting it here lol... |

Haha well it can't be much of a secret DMadison if I'm posting it here lol... WEst Rock quarry on the south end used to be 'secret' lol. Have you been there yet? |
|
Haha very true. I just know there is so much more in Ct that I have no clue about. I need to get out of this rock gym in RI and explore! |

I am in the Enfield, East Granby area Mo |

Second Enfield climber in a week I've come across, nice. I'm in long meadow, 3 blocks from Enfield |
