The Rocketpack

I've been working on designing the ideal climbing back pack for awhile, and I've come up with a product that I feel is pretty cool. I'm partnering with Organic climbing to manufacture the pack in the USA.

This backpack is designed for comfort and style. It's balanced for climbing, providing durability over rocky terrain. Made in the USA. The Rocketpack is compact, but beefy, with enough room to carry all the gear you need for your climbing day trips.

If you're at a hanging belay station and you're trying to pull something out of the pack, is there a chance that the vertical zipper will come undone while you have the top open? It would be a hazard for dropping items if that vertical zipper got pulled down.

I've definitely had zippers that have come undone by the weight of things in the pack, and it's usually alleviated by pulling one of the zippers all the way to one side. This one wouldn't have that ability and it doesn't look like there's a way to lock that zipper in place.

Thanks for the encouragement folks!

Rob - The storage is between 22-26 liters roughly, depending how overstuffed the collar is. It also has three "drop in" pockets on the inside.

Ollie - Good question about the hanging belay. I have tested this pack at a lot of hanging belays, and I have not had any trouble with things falling out of the pack. The zippers don't "just open" by themselves - as there is a decent amount of friction to pull them, because the main zipper is actually extremely beefy, a #10 zipper. I snapped a photo (see below)

In my experience the zippers work great, and don't come open if you have the pack clipped to your anchor.

Secondly, the lid has an interior "super secure" inside zippered pocket for stuff like your phone, your headlamp, wallet, keys, etc. that you really don't want ANY chance of falling out when you open the lid to get your light weight jacket, or to just grab a granola bar.

#10 Zipper

Please ask any more questions! And Thank you!

Since the pack is so small, what is the main purpose of the front zipper? Do you use it much in regular use? If it's so you can reach stuff at the bottom of the pack, would it make sense to have it open from bottom to top?

If it's not that necessary, getting rid of the zipper would definitely reduce weight and complexity and reduce your cost of goods. Although the contrast of the white zipper and red pack looks really good. I'm always a fan of racing stripes.

(Sorry for the multiple posts, I'm a product development engineer and I'm procrastinating at work :)

1) the back zipper is useless for such a small volume backpack.
2) is there a way to strap a rope to it?
3) Some design inspiration for you:

There are already lots of packs out there, and most of them are top loaders. This design is different, in that it provides quick access to your stuff, and can fill a transitional role for those moments when you sort of need a rope bag and you sort of need a real backpack with suspension to carry 20-30 lbs of gear.

The volume of the pack is expandable - the collar and lid provide for a pretty effective means to over stuff and cinch down your gear, and stuff extra ropes underneath -

Check out the demo video to see how much stuff you can put into it --

I'd have liked to have seen compression straps or zippers to reduce volume on the climb. Looks pretty sleek overall.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
