This is so sad. Condolences to everyone who knew him. Makes you realize even going out for a walk in the mountains can be dangerous. Stay safe everyone.

Is that the hiking route that goes through the keyhole and around and up to the summit? So he made it to the keyhole and fell somewhere along the way? Where are "the ledges"?

Massive bummer.

Yeah, it's part of the Keyhole Route - if the report is accurate, the Ledges is the area right after you pass through the Keyhole (kinda goes: Boulderfield -> Keyhole -> Ledges -> Trough -> Narrows -> Homestretch).

It should be noted that if you don't know the way (and can't see the bulls-eyes b/c of snow obscuring them), the Ledges are not super straightforward and it's easy to get lost, since there's much traversing and descending to get you to a good location to enter the Trough. It's non-obvious to have to descend so much.

The Narrows are a bit more straightforward, as there's really only one way to go: towards Homestretch. The moniker isn't absolutely fitting.

It's not super clear if they were ascending or descending (after doing Cables) when the accident occurred. I'm very sorry to hear about another accident on Longs, this year.

As a good friend of Pete's, I really appreciate all of the optimism and lack of judgement on this thread. The guy was an incredible person both mentally and physically and there is a huge hole left behind for those that knew him.

So sorry to hear. The ledges can be treacherous with a coating of ryme ice, or loose snow. Not really a walk IMO in the winter. Can get really sketchy really fast. Condolences to his friends and family.

Rufus,Sorry for such a sad loss. My condolences to the family and friends. I did not know Peter but am always affected by tragedy. Life is precious and i am deeply saddened whenever the mountains call us back out of existence. Celebrate his life, his triumphs, all of it! Embrace what you have cause tomorrow it may be gone...the car,the career, the house, the fancy hair do,the status symbols, your life. I don't know exactly what makes me happy and whole but my most fond memories are the ones i have shared with great partners(helping others).......it really sucks when so many PEOPLE get lost searching for a deeper meaning to this strange rat raced world. We never know what's around the corner....rest in peace Peter!

So sorry to wake up to this news--to Peter's family and friends, even though most of us are strangers to you, we're thinking about you all and sending you our best wishes.

Peter was my nephew. He was like a son. We climbed hard sport and boulders often. This tragedy will affect a whole bunch of people who knew Peter and his family. Peter knew what he was doing, but unfortunately hit the summit late. As climbers, we know that it only takes a second for things to go bad. Be careful out there and thanks for all the posts. His dad has been watching the forum and was touched by the passion and kind words communicated by the brothers and sisters of our climbing community.
Thanks to everyone.

Dylan posted this because the first post did not state that SAR had already been notified. If the OP hadn't notified SAR and had just posted on MP then this would have been very helpful advice.

I was sorry to see this, my thoughts are with his friends and family.

No father should have to bury his son. I can't imagine having to. RIP.

Another brother called home by the mountains. Hopefully partying with all those called home before him. I will raise a glass for you, Peter. I will climb something and say your name in celebration. No matter how prepared or proficient, any one of us could be called to join him at any time.

What Dylan posted was that the guy he was addressing was an idiot for not covering the bases, even though he already had. I'm not the only one that thought this was condescending. Could've been a little more sensitive about it. Ask if he's contacted the authorities, instead of shining ignorant light on him. He chose to be an a-hole. Guideline #1 ;/
