@wivanoff: Thanks, that's helpful.

How tall are the walls at City climb/Prime Climb/Glastonbury?

City Climb claims 30' tall, 7000 sq ft, 35 ropes
Prime Climb claims 40' tall, 15000 sq ft, 42 ropes
Stone Age claims 32' tall, 4500 sq ft, ? ropes
Carabiners claims 45' tall, ? sq ft, 75 ropes
Central Rock Gym (Glastonbury) claims 40' tall, 25000 sq ft, ? ropes

I do not know this for a fact but I've heard that Carabiner's does not allow leading and requires you belay with a GriGri. Leading is allowed at the others. Brien at PC runs some outdoor programs in summer. Kevin at Stone Age is an AMGA guide and I think his bread and butter is guiding. Dunno about the others.

Give me a shout when you get here and I can answer questions/show you around or connect you with someone who can. Source: climbed here for over 30 years, have contributed to 4 different guidebooks.

grew up in CT, for anyone saying anywhere specific is safe....beware. I grew up in one of the "nicer" towns, never leave your car unlocked with anything in it. there are downsides to basically any town, drugs violence are pretty much anywhere.

I was never a fan of the ct climbing, hence why im in az. but there are worse states to live and you are, as many folks said close to other climbing areas. The beaches are nice in most areas.

  • Used to go to the gym in new haven, saw a shooting once a few blocks away and another time the police walked into the gym looking for someone...haha but decent gym for sure.

carabiners has a massive lead wall and you can lead anything with draws on it on the TR routes. you dont need a grigri, either. just watch out for the manager becasue shes a total bitch.

Thanks for the clarification. People I heard that from must have been talking about Carabiners New Bedford, MA

From their website:
"Q. Can I use an ATC or tube style belay device?
A. Carabiner’s New Bedford does not allow ATC or other tube-style belay devices. The only belay device allowed to be used is the Petzl Grigri."

I've heard that from several people. No personal experience

Anyway, I found this in case anyone's interested:

This has got to be tricky when briging chicks home to bang. Anywho, it'll be warming up soon, you could hit the street corner and make some fast cash.

Thanks again everyone. Particularly the for the tech specs.

Fortunately I'm not opposed to having to belay with a grigri.

It doesnt surprise me that someone who says "anywho" would recommend this tactic.

I ended up getting my Visa in June and moving here at the end of July. We're living in Storrs/Mansfield area until December but then I think will move to Southington, West Hartford or Middletown as my wife runs experiments at Wesleyan aswell as UCONN.

Not managed to get to the Gunks this summer but have climbed a lot in Connecticut, I really like how convenient the climbing is, even to go for a few hours on a weekend, or after work (Cheshire area) is worth the short drive. A lot of things are annoying about CT, silly laws, taxes and 8 hour safe driving class, but I think it's a good place to live as a climber. I really like trap rock. Just lucky to be here now with my wife really though, thanks for asking :)

And yes the weather has been mostly really good, is that unusual for the summer here? Can't be more fickle than the British weather where it's usually sunny all week and then wet at the weekend.

And now welcome the real prime-time climbing weather!!!

I split my time between Mansfield and the Cheshire area, if you're looking for a local climbing partner hit me up and I can either climb with you or point you in the direction of somebody that can / the Uconn Climbing Club

CT can't suck that much.. another new sport line FA'd last night in a major CT city, 15 min from MetroNorth and a 5 min walk from your car. It ain't boulder but it aint a total bag either, hardly sucks compared to say Kansas or the rest of the midwest...

I'll never move back after living their 22 years, but yeah it's got its charms. Hell yes there are worst places to be!

Totally get it.. if I got a job offer in my line of work in Denver area I'd be out there without question! Condo would be on the mkt and I'd be outta here in a week or less.

I'm pulling this out my ass but, in thinking about my experiences in other states in the North East, proportional to the amount of space in CT, I think it's probably got more climbing per square mile then the rest of the NE states, except for probably NH. Maine - mostly uninhabited. NY - mostly corn fields and flat forests. Mass - world class rock in localized pockets. VT - could be close. Its just there's soooooooo much bullshit surrounding climbing in CT that it just sucks. If its not an access issue its some govt bullshit, and if its not that its some wanker spewing about bolts.

I pretty much just troll around Cathole when I'm in the area

EDIT:
I'm sure that wasn't too informative but its right down 691 next to Hubbard Park if you remember the area well
