Smuggs Page reorganized

I just reorganized the Parking Lot Boulders page for Smugglers Notch. Instead of just a random list of problems, the problems are now organized by boulder, so it's hopefully easier to llocate stuff and add new problems.

Some of the boulder names I just made up, so if you know a more "correct" name, let me know. Other names, I took from the original, out of print, guide.

Let me know if you see any glaring mistakes.

I plan to do the same for the Top of the Notch Page soon.

While you are at it, you should probably update the main Smuggs page which seems to still be focused on ice climbing, even though it now is really a bouldering only section.

It would be nice as well if there were some write ups on the trad climbs in the area, like Quartz Crack, Elephant Head Butress etc. Theres a lot more than bouldering up there.

Nice work Roger. I added a few problems today as well. Any plans to do the Top of the Notch area? I wouldn't mind doing it if you'd like.

Oh yeah anyone have any idea what the boulder behind the Monkey Butt boulder is called? Or the problem names for that matter. The boulder leans back onto another one and forms a tunnel of sorts. It has some graffiti on it. The stream that runs out from the Nemesis boulder also runs down through this tunnel. There's a hard V10ish problem on the front, and on the backside is a cool arrete problem that you need to put your pads in the stream in order to climb (unless its dry). Its located right near the outhouses.

Jeff- You can edit the main page by clicking on the blue "Improve This Page" button and making suggestions for what you want it to say.

Chris-Go ahead and do the write ups, they are definitely needed(or just buy Travis' guidebook as it's a damn good resource.) In fourteen years of living in VT and bouldering at the Notch, I've climbed, at most, a half-dozen routes there, so I'm not qualified to do the route descriptions. To paraphrase Morgan, those walls are wicked scary(to my wimpy ass).

eddysamson- Yeah, I will probably try to do the Top of the Notch in the next few days.

I had one improvement suggestion sent to me today to add new problems. Everyone can add problems to each boulders page, even though I created the pages.

Nice to see that 4 more problems were added to the site today because of this. There's lots more to go though...my spreadsheet for Smuggs currently lists over 200 problems. And I know Bill just sent 2 new ones about a week ago. And I've got a few dozen sitting waiting to be done in various nooks and crannies.

Almost forgot to answer that question.

That's the Outhouse Boulder. The arete is Outhouse Arete. The 10ish problem is Deep Down n' Dirty. V11 in Kemple' s guide, but I can't possibly give input about that.

Woah Bill is still finding new stuff? Thats great! Any idea where they are located? He recently told my friend Troy about some forgotten boulders down the road on the way to the Roots Boulder but on the Eastern side of the road (Roots is West side) were they down there?

Yeah, Bill climbed something new recently, but I haven't had a chance to talk to him to find out where but II don't think it was down the road.

There are tons of unclimbed boulders down the road, on both sides, and many we climbed 10 years ago and have regrown their vegetation. Most of the rock is not as good a quality as the stuff at the top, but most days I'd rather climb something new.

The Top of the Notch problems have now been reorganized by boulder. Hopefully, this makes it easier to navigate, and gets more problems added to the database.

Thank you for doing this. The Smugg's page is so much easier to navigate now!

I live in Colorado now and haven't climbed there in 15+ years. I'd rather let a local with current info do the write-ups. I know there are a lot of new routes, both trad and sport that have been put up in the last number of years. In the event I do get back for a visit and am able to climb, it would be nice to have some info on the developed routes. In addition, it's always nice to read comments/trip reports on my old stomping grounds.

Tristan-You're welcome.

Chris- Along with getting Travis' book Tough Schist, you should like his page Vermont Rock on facebook. There are updates nearly every other week on there for new routes at either Bolton or Smuggs.

Unfortunately, for truly new boulder problems in VT, it seems that here is the only place you can look, and that less than 6 of us are posting anything, though I know there are more people out there doing things.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
