Cost to climb at RRG?

Simple newbie question for possible first trip to the red: Does it cost any money, or are there any fees or waivers needed to climb at the Red River Gorge? I know Muir valley is privately owned, so I'd assume that part has at least some charge, any hints? Thanks a ton!

No fees & no waivers!

But pitch in if you can to help the Friends of Muir Valley ensure that Muir Valley transfers successfully.

and help the Red River Gorge Climbers Coalition pay off Miller Fork rrgcc.org/donate/

You may not need to pay to climb, but those groups are making it possible at a lot of the crags at the Red.

I believe there is climbing at Torrent Falls that you would have to pay for to climb there if you wanted to. There is tons of climbing outside of Torrent though, so no real need to force yourself to climb there.

Last time I climbed at Muir Valley, the Weber's were encouraging folks to sign the following waiver before climbing. It would be nice if you did so.

Wrong on the no waivers. There is a waiver for Muir Valley. You can find it at there web site. THere is one for Coalition land but I never found it. Nat. Forest land is waiverless.

As to that wavier thingy...

If you wait and sign it by hand, in person, then you're obligated to sign it every year (or every time you enter...I was never sure which, but was given both answers two consecutive years).

If you sign it via the website, I'm told you're good as gold for life, never have to sign in again. (But do go ahead and bring in a couple bucks for the tip box.)

As for the cost of the Red, yeah, you're entire ego, man. Even the gimmie 5.10s there will suck your will to live.

Good luck and I'll see yah out there in November...

Routes that get climbed alot at the red are probably more difficult than the rating. Routes that don't get climbed alot are probably easy for the rating.

The thing to remember is that the rock is sandstone so it tends to break down alot faster than granite etc so some of the holds on the routes climbed alot are alot more sloppy then they used to be.

I found that some of the 10s were harder than the 11s when i was there.

This can be true, but I don't think for the reasons you state.

The rock at the RRG is some of the least worn for the volume of traffic I've ever seen. For sandstone, it is fairly hard and the features that get climbed in the Red aren't really prone to breaking or polishing. Some of the 10s are just hard, some of the 11s are just easy. Some of it comes down to your own individual style and skill set. I really doubt that rock degradation is making the Red harder in the same way that limestone sport climbing gets harder over time.
Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
