Looking for beta on rogers rock, Lake George

I am going to a wedding on Lake George and I am going to try to climb the next day OCTOBER 19. It looks like the rogers rock campground closes OCT 12. I was wondering where people rent a canoe and how long the approach canoe is. When you get to the base do you tie the boat up or do you just drag the boat onto the shore? How rough is the water? Also, and maybe more importantly, do you think it will be too cold?

Thanks,

Tommy

I did it a couple years ago and rented a 2-person kayak from the closest EMS. We found it to be much cheaper than the local canoe-rental options. We tied it to a tree while climbing, I don't remember any "beach" at the base where you could really pull it out of the water. We had calm water but I've heard it can get pretty rough. October may be cool, you'll have to watch the forecast. Hope that helps some, have fun!

Was just there on Tue/Wed, campground rented canoes at $20, was told available at local marina at $45. Took us 20 min there 30 min back from campground beach, waves can be choppy. No "beach" at little fingers, you have to pull the canoes 40 ft up a slope and rest against the trees/rocks. At that time of the year, the wind is sure to be cold and can blow nasty through the river valley. Already frost high in the High Peaks and by mid Oct bring your ski jacket, hat and gloves if you plan to be outside all day. A windless sunny day though would be sweet ....

I have done this many, many times though always in summer. it is almost unbearably hot in summer so my guess is just like roofing, a sunny day in Oct could be T shirt weather on that black rock though I would certainly be prepared for much more.
Wear your life jackets and have your gear lashed to the canoe. a wall mart dry bag is a good idea to have warm dry cloths. I know people who swamped and got hypothermic.

many times it has been a relativly calm paddle out to the cliff but a few hours later you look down at the lake and see white caps. pull the canoe out of the water and up on to a steep rocky bank. tie it to trees. I sometimes put the life jackets on the big rocks to protect the canoe. leaving the canoe in the water tied to shore is asking for troubble. If the waves pick up it will get smashed against the rocks the entire time you are on the cliff. One time I had pulled the canoe up out of the water and tied it high and dry. the lake got rough and by the time we got back to the boat it was 1/3 full of water from waves crashing on the rocks
It can be a very pleasant mellow outing or a real adventure. Twice I have had waves crashing over the bow on the return trip and had to stop in the lee of Juniper Island to dump the water out for the last leg of the paddle.
Wonderfull place!

There's a place to rent canoes about 2 minutes up 9N. It's a campground on the left side of the road as you drive north on 9N from the Roger's Rock campground. That place might be open at that time.

The paddle is just like as been said. Pull your canoe up onto the shore about 200 feet left of little finger. When you get to the slide you'll see the spot I'm talking about. The water will like glass in the morning and choppy when you get done.

The rock gets morning sun so you should be comfortable.

October weather is very hit/miss (in the Northeast, but in particular the mountains). Yes, even early season snows. I just wouldn't make reservations that revolved around climbing plans. I'd put your odds at 50/50 for that place on that date.

[the Gunks, on the other hand, are pretty awesome in October, relatively speaking... what a difference a few hours in the car makes!]

I have spent many Weeks in a canoe on lake george around Columbus Day. Water can be glass or 4 white caps. Air temps can be 20's to upper 70's and a great day to swim.
She is a fickle lake so be prepared to just do the campground wall or drive to the east shore and do shelving rock.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
