Description Suggest change

Oppdal is a village and a municipality in Norway. It is mostly known for skiing, but it also holds some of the best ice climbing in Norway, and many good rock climbing crags.

Oppdal village is flanked by Trollheimen in the west, and Dovre (with the fantastic Snøhetta Traverse >2000m) in the south, and vast high planes in the east.

The elevation is generally high, and the climate is inlands-climate, giving good conditions for ice formation.

Short distance from Trondheim, and easy access and short approach to ice climbs (many of the classic routes are lined up roadside along the E6 in Drivdalen south of Oppdal village) makes Oppdal a popular destination for alpine and climbing.

There are two new guide books for Oppdal, covering summer and winter climbing respectively. These can be ordered from, or aquired at the local outdoors-shop Vertical Playground (vpg.no).

Getting There Suggest change

Oppdal village is located next to the E6. From Oslo its 400 km north (5h30min). From Trondheim follow the E6 119 km south. The train line Dovrebanen Oslo-Trondheim also stops at Oppdal, but it will be hard to get around without a car. From the west: drive to Sunndalsøra and follow E70 to Oppdal.
