I am planning on heading up to Rumney in the coming weeks but I am having some issues finding where to camp. I have looked at the climbrumney.com website but its pretty difficult to tell from the campground websites if they are any good. Does anyone have any advice or know of a good campground? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Best,
Santiago

We either dirtbag it and bivvy in my van(not at the cliff) or stay in Baker River Campground. I like Baker River for a few reasons. It is close, there is a beach, the owner has been nothing but super nice, and it is clean. They charge $31 a night for a site, or $12 a night (used to be $10) for climbers. They have a group site they put the climbers on, but when not busy we have stayed at other sites.
Only problem is the bathroom, though it is clean has some nasty sulfur smelling water. They must have two wells as one stinks and the other is clean and clear. If your site has smelly water, use a spigot closer to the entrance.

With the best camping just across the street from the crag closed for the season (due to health reasons currently endured and being treated for by one of the wonderful owners), your next best bet would be Mountain Pines, just off rt 25 in Rumney.

Camping at MP is $10/night pp
West bank of the Baker River
Running water, plumbed toilets, free hot shower

But still, all the best to the most friendly and accommodating camp ground owners in Rumney - Tom and Joanne of Rattlesnake Campground

EDIT: I would avoid Baker River Campground noted by Rich, have camped there and won't go back, for personal experience reasons. Happy sending either way Santiago, the climbing tends to make up for any subpar camping experience you may or may not encounter!

It's worth noting that mountain pines is very close to the road, which seems to be a major route for truckers. When I stayed there last year the road noise was quite loud in the early morning.

I'm tring out baker river tonight for the first time, I'm sure it won't be as convient as rattlesnake campgound, but real toilets and a shower might be nice!

Well, I was able to sleep far better through any road traffic at mountain pines in comparison to the drinking loud middle aged groups of baker river.. being noisy late into the night that weren't there to camp and climb, just there really to drink and pass out.. Granted my friends and I enjoy a good party too - but not at 1a, 2a in the morning in ridiculously cramped proximity to other campers. To each their own...

Thank you all so much for your help. I think we are probably going to check out Baker River or Mountain Pines. Derek, your situation sounds like it was rough. Sorry to hear that.

That's unfortunate that management allowed people to be that rowdy at such an hour. All the climbers I know around here camp at baker and have never had anything but great reviews.

If you do decide to go with Mountain pines, don't camp at the very back site because you'll be about 20 yards from the road.

I'll throw one last suggestion your way...the wal Mart in Plymouth isn't far at all and I saved myself easily $200 last season by sleeping there. It obviously has it's draw backs, but if you have the right vehicle and find the dark corner in the back it's not so bad.

+1 to D'acres really nice accommodations. -and if you spend the extra $ they have great home cooked meals there.

Santiago, thanks for the condolences haha we were told sternly upon arrival at Baker by the owner to not be loud, it was a family campground, quiet hours at 10p... (assuming the owner thought we would be rowdy since we were a group of climbers?) when it turned out it was the parents of some families that wanted to party into the night. I thought it was oddly ironic...

As well, another +1 to Walmart as a last resort. have camped there several times and the free factor makes it a bit more ok to say F it and tent it in their woods or in your car.

But seriously Santiago, have a blast climbing- You're gonna love it at Rumney

Baker River has been nothing but good to us. We have stayed there several times for a few nights each and have never heard anyone being loud after hours.

Walmart is always a last option and I've never had any problems staying there either.

There are about 100 other threads asking the same question you are...

Come on Brooklyn... Why don't you use the search box? Or google? Would save you lots of time.

Had a great time staying at Mountain Pines last October. Free hot showers! And super cheap!

I stayed at Baker River when I went to Rumney last fall. I have to say I really enjoyed it, I experienced no noise issues, the facilities were good and the people very nice. I may try to find the cheapest campground next time, but all in all, I would go back.

I love this place and stay here everytime on the beach. Best is putting your air mattress in and floating down to the climbing area and then shuttling back. I would note though that the road can be a bit noisy sometimes...

Huge fan of Mountain Pines. We stayed here every 4th of July from 2007-2010. We'd buy about 2 grand worth of fireworks and set them off on the beach. Owners couldn't have been more accomodating- one year they even comped our sites in exchange for the show.

D acres was the best deal I found for pitching a tent with just 1 person.
Very quiet at night.

The one time we camped at D Acres the guy taking the money was so high that he asked for our campsite money no less than 7 times while the girls in our group were waiting to use the bathroom for feminine needs.

The evil temptation to just say 'chaaaaa bro, we paid you already- you were supposed to bring us change for 100, remember?' was just too overwhelming and we had to get out of there and wait outside.

Not sure if this is still the situation there, but at the time, they charged for showers (and every other thing you can think of), the bathrooms smelled worse than most outhouses, and there were no private campfires. If we were spending time down at the house, every 10 minutes someone would try to get us to buy the granola, take a yoga class, or make a donation.

No thanks.

That sounds awesome... wish I could have been there for that! My buddy even swears he saw a UFO above the beach one visit. I was there... I don't know what to think.

And I don't want to hippie bash but ya D'Acres has got a lot of things to deal with... And for one person solo just a tent for the night, the best is 250 ft up a trail head.

I don't know details, Tiff, but I heard Mrs Camara was very sick. That most likely is why they are closed. I haven't heard anything lately.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
