Description Suggest change

This Crag has it all...sunny, shady, crowded and secluded. Just pick the day of the week and the time of day then live with what you get. It's a nice crag and worth a stop by on a Tuesday! The rock is granite and there are over 70 route! All routes can be top roped.

Getting There Suggest change

From I-90 take exit 283 B (Freya St/Thor St) go North on Freya St, drive 2.4 mi. Take a right on Euclid Ave. and drive 1.9 mi. Euclid will turn into E. Upriver Dr. Look for John H. Shields Park on the left just after the road begins following the Spokane River. The large wall facing the river is Main Wall.

Namining and History of the Area

Most current guidebook is Marty Bland's Inland Northwest Rock Climbs (2001), pictured in Anthony Sandoval's post above. The rocks are called Minnehaha Rocks, and the park here is called John Shields Park: 2 different things. So technically, Minnehaha Rocks at or in John Shields Park is most accurate. The rocks have historically been called Minnehaha Rocks since the 1930s or before, due to its proximity to the Minnehaha neighborhood with its own Minnehaha Park to the west. Property for Shields Park and Minnehaha Rocks was purchased by the climbing community (including the Spokane Mountaineers and outdoor shop Mountain Gear) and Spokane County Parks in 1986 from the widow of John Shields, who graciously sold her property to be used as a park in the name of her deceased husband, instead of selling to a developer. After purchase was made, we discovered that the main wall and rocks to the west were on Spokane City-owned land. So the park became a jointly owned and managed Spokane City-Spokane County park.    (From Steve Reynolds's comment below.)
