When adding a new route, how do I indicate that the route is toprope only? The site seems to be forcing me to choose sport or trad protection (in the "type" field) and the route has neither.

No. It's better, I think, to select 'Other', then check the TR box right below that.

When I do that, the site gives me an error ("must select sport or trad for rock routes" or something like that)

That's new, sorry. I just looked at previously entered TR problems. When I entered a test route I got the same problem. Nick has some work to do! There is plenty of tradition of TR problems, especially for lines close to other routes to avoid gridbolting or interfering with a trad line.

For old farts, TR could be considered trad. Back in MA, lots of routes are TR or solo. We called 'em trad back in the day.

I don't know Leo. We started climbing at roughly the same time and area and I don't remember people ever considering a TR route the same as one that is a trad lead; definitely a route, but not the same. I think a TR designation is very useful, meaning it has been linked free, just not lead for whatever reason. As it is now the TR designation added to a sport or trad route just means you can get to the anchors without leading it, which if you think about it, is kind of nebulous. One can get to almost any top anchor by rapping in from the top with maybe some aid, unless you are talking about a tower or something similar. If you want to signify that it is easy to set up a TR, isn't that better as a comment in the description? Trying to designate that with a TR check box is not worth giving up a TR route designation along with Trad/ Sport/ Aid and Bouldering etc IMO. Even if you could use the 'Other' category would be better. boulder/TR is also good for some really high highballs that are usually TRed by most

For what it's worth, I think none of the choices need to be mutually exclusive, as long as one choice is selected. Certain routes could be all of the above. The same climb could be bolted, be protectable with trad gear, and be set up for a TR anchor. I suppose there's no need to keep boulder/other mutually exclusive either.

While I won't comment about bolts on protectable trad climbs here, for the purpose of the site, I think the choices could be all checkboxes instead of radio buttons...

I have updated the text as shown in the photo. TR-only routes aren't Trad or Sport, and Other seems good enough - I don't think there are enough of them to create a category.

The problem still exists. When you select Other+TR, the site gives an error message once you press submit.
