Should I replace my helmet?
|
My helmet got squished by a friend in a strange occurrence, leaving two stress marks in the plastic. The marks are not cracks but weak points where the plastic buckled. Would this be a worthy instance to replace my helmet? It's relatively new, as I bought it within the calendar year. Maybe if I'm asking whether I should replace it, then I already have my answer..? |

Are there any cracks in the hard foam inside? |

Looks like the damaged areas are near the bottom. I wouldn't worry about it. But if you are worried, you know the answer. |

Just picture a rock impacting the helmet in one of the bent areas. What do you expect will happen? Do you think whatever happens will be different from what would happen if it wasn't bent? From your past experiences with plastic, when it is bent like that, is it easier to break or otherwise not function as you'd like? Do you have any illusions about what a helmet will or will not protect you from? Do YOU feel like you are in any danger wearing that helmet? |

It's fine. |

My understanding is this type of helmet directs the force of an impact into the hard foam. So if the foam isn't cracked it should be fine. I recently fell onto a ledge and the foam clearly cracked under the force, leaving my noggin well intact :) Also considering the location of the weakened shell on the sides of the helmet I wouldn't be very concerned about taking a hard impact to these areas. |

I have that same helmet, are your rivets rusting where the webbing connects to the plastic shell? |
