I'm moving to Chattanooga and wondering what part of town you all would recommend. I generally prefer downtown areas because I like to be able to walk to work/shopping. My other priority is being close to climbing.
How many minutes is downtown from climbing (including approach time)?
Are there other, closer, neighborhoods you would recommend looking into?
Depending on the traffic on Broad Street and the availability of a parking place at the upper parking lot, you can be roped up at Sunset 30 minutes after you get off work downtown.
T Wall is a bit removed from downtown, is approached via a long narrow winding road, and has a much longer approach. An hour and change, I'd say. And that's if you really bust ass up the hill.
Chattanooga's walkability isn't very good. There are some apartment complexes downtown, but they tend to be pricy. If you want to be nearer to trad climbing (Sunset), but also reasonably close to downtown, have a look at the St. Elmo neighborhood (it's at the base of lookout mountain). If you'd rather be near some sport climbing/bouldering, you'd be better off looking for an apartment in Northshore (Leda and LRC are basically straight up hwy27--10/15 minutes depending on traffic and both have very short approaches).
Mountain creek road has lots of decent apartments and is convenient to Leda and t wall. Driving distance to downtown is 5min maybe a little more during rush hour. There are groceries, walmart, and some other things nearby too.
