Does anyone know if the road to Holcomb is open this time of year? All the way to the barbwire fence? Thanks

There are several roads that lead to the pinnacles and all but one are open year round.

Big Bear highs have been in the 50s, so the roads should be clear.

I want snow!!!! :(

The road had very little snow, just patches here and there, the walk in had even less, we were the only group that was there until around 1 PM when another group of three arrived. Coyote Crag was perfect with a 3-5 MPH breeze from 8:30 AM until 11 AM then went to opposite side and enjoyed some runs on Skyy Slab - thanks for all the responses.

P.S. I want snow to but until it shows up I'm hitting spots that are usually filled with ice and snow :)

Sweet... How do the temps "feel" in the sun?

I was up there yesterday. The roads are clear the weather is great. The big mud puddles on the south road are full of water. I parked my tiburon at those and walked in. Once you get past the puddles the rest is clear. I was hiking and bouldering in short sleeves and very comfortable. Got a little cold when I was just sitting.

Yes, very big puddles on March 8 - saw a few vehicles parked at the junction but got my Land Rover all the way to the fence without problems, fun drive!

As of April 11th. 2-14 - Van Dusen Canyon Rd gate is open with dry travels all but one small puddle along the way. At the T intersection we opted for the eastern 3N16 > 3N32 access which was also bone dry all the way to the Central Pinnacles parking area. Can't speak for going around the campground and approaching from the west but there were others in the area that had used that access.

Game on for Holcomb. Nice. Was there ever any real snow up there this season? Seems like ot might lead to a tinderbox....

It's very dry - I would be a proponent of no camping at all in this area until next year, if it manages to snow in the 2014/15 season.

I dread this place going up in flames.

chris, yeah, that what i was thinking.... seems like this area sees as many climbers as it does "campers" ( read 4xers, shooters, partiers ect ) That would be a shame if it came from anything but good old lightning striking.

I agree, it would be a shame if that place were to burn. Seeing as a lot of people camp out of bounds, it's a possibility.

I've gone there a few times these past 2 months and all the roads out there were in great condition! A few small puddles, but nothing to worry about!

Great sport climbing! Have fun!

Can I get up there in a low clearance car with 2 wheel drive ?

dholte · · Mountain View, CA · Joined Jan 2013 · Points: 491

drive slowly and avoid potholes, we did it a few weeks ago, its not too bad.

I take my lowered Subaru into the south parking lot with ease..

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
