I noticed that there have been no recent comments on the route page. Anyone recently take DOWT to the walk off? Is it still loose and dirty? How about continuing Sour Mash to the top?

Hey Dan - Think I met you a few months ago, you purchased a Red Rock Photo print from my girl, if I am not mistaken. Anyways, I climbed DOWT to the summit last fall. PM if you are interested in more info on it and we can meet up for beer to discuss.

It's been a while (2007?) since I've climbed DOWT to the top, it was a fantastic adventure. D'angelo was adamant that from the end of the route proper there is an obvious 3rd class gully to the summit. We didn't see anything resembling that description, so we climbed an obvious ramp system for several hundred feet. Very 4th class climbing with no protection/anchors available and sometimes friable rock. The top of this was an airy perch to stage the final pitch, 40 feet or so of 5.8ish chimney climbing on sandy rock. I recall it being a bit stressful because there was no reasonable belay anchor and a fall in the first 20 feet could have pulled us both off. A #2 camalot near a chockstone is vividly imprinted in my memory. We topped out the formation at dusk and walked out in the dark, a long and chilly day in early January.

I've never climbed Epinephrine, so I cannot tell you where this is in relation to that route.

I have done both DoWT to the top, and Velvet Wall Original Route. The top half of both routes are very similar, lots of simulclimbing up 4th class ramps.

I have also done Refried Brains to the top, which is about the same as the others.

All have some loose rock, but the technical difficulty is low, and the top parts of these routes go quickly.

I have done it, but won't do it again and don't recommend it for one reason. Someone, maybe not as careful as they should have been, I don't know....but they pulled off or kicked off a large stone. It shattered against the wall and the shrapnel could have easily taken out any one of three of us on lead across the wall below, Prince of Darkness, Fiddler, etc. Whoever it was did scream bloody murder knowing the potential consequences....we all hugged the wall and waited...and I will never forget the noise of the many pieces whizzing by my head, the velocity and size of which, helmets would have been of little comfort. Nam flashbacks indeed.

Thanks for the responses.
Matt- Yep that's me. I get lots of compliments on that print. I'll shot you a call this evening if you're free.

DOWT to the top sounds like a great adventure.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
