Is leaving your dog at the base of multipitch climb really Animal abuse?

Anyone here ever eaten dog meat? Seriously, not being a jerk. It must taste better than fricassee of housecat.

Imagine that, another "Dogs at the crags" thread....

Here in AZ, at least in NAZ, we don't seem to have all of these problems, thankfully. There are usually more dogs than people at some of the sport crags, and nobody seems to mind. I certainly don't, in fact I look forward to seeing pups outside having fun. There are few times, even in multipitch areas like Sedona that I run into other climbers that don't have dogs. Just seems to be part of the game here.

It's kinda crazy to me that people compare a dog to a child, as the dog does a pretty fair job of taking care of itself, even without a master. The child cannot do this.

I agree DesertRat. It's nice to see the locals' chill attitude here in northern AZ. Sometimes we encounter barking dogs outside, or unfriendly dogs, but it is not a big deal. People deal and move on.

No need to get all worked up about it.

Well you have not been around much . Very common to have dogs at the crags ..more so in the Lake District ... plus in the pubs and in the non food shops. Very very dog friendly in Cumbria,Northern UK.

These climbs are in a canyon well known by locals to be a haven for bighorn sheep, who are stressed by the presence of predator (dog) urine. I'm not sure what an appropriate response to this kind of utterly irresponsible and thoughtless behavior is. I'm open to suggestions.
We'll thank god your predatory self has never ever gone pee in Red Rocks. Assuming that is where you choose to get out.

But seriously if there are people around climbing all over stuff I think the big horns will go somewhere else, dogs or no.

Live and let live. Dogs can tell who the bad people are. Maybe if lots of dogs bark at you it is a sign.

I feel the same way DesertRat. Dogs bring joy to my life, I appreciate their company.
However, the few poor dog owners that fail to provide structure and discipline for their dogs and bring them to the crag; they make a negative perception for all dogs and their masters.
People just need to make sure their dog doesn't negatively impact anyone else.
People should also worry a little less about what everyone else is doing and more about their selves.(as long as others and their dogs aren't bothering you)

I am just curious if somebody tried Zyprexa sublingual on dogs?

So I got this cat drunk on valerian root once. Very entertaining!

chosspector wrote:Depends in the dog and the climbing area. If it's a low-volume climbing area I'll leave my dog ( who is not a barker) at the packs untied, with shade, and lots of water and he chills until we come down. If it's a busier area then no way because people can't be trusted. Some douchebag might try to "rescue" him or call the authorities...
Great answer.

Very least it is bad form.

I've been against dogs at the crag ever since I was out climbing in the Narrows at Wichitas, OK. A guy's dog fell and broke it's back. Having to listen to them attempt to move the dog, and eventually shooting it was gut wrenching. Care for your dog... in the next life they might be the master?

Choss gave a great answer... as it really depends on the dog, owner, and the crag.

Everyone says they pick up after fido yet in 30+ years of climbing I've yet to witness one single individual pick up after there pet !!!! Not one , but I've met quite a few hypocrites who claim they do !! So you still think everyone picks up after there pet?? well just go take at walk around garden of the gods or red rocks , this is but two examples.... local ones but I see the same thing everywhere I go ! I'm not even going into wilderness experience because there is no such thing anymore ! But I will say this , I think it's cruel and unusual punishment for a dog to be left unattended anywhere I highly doubt animal control is going to drive miles out into nowhere to investigate anyway . And giving the owner a piece of your mind will do one of three things ...... 1 you get a blank stare 2 you end up in an argument 3you get your ass kicked or end up kicking the shit out of some tool because you just had to open you cock holster and say something ! Everybody loves fido so why not devote some quality time to fido ? And leave them at home when you go climb ! It's really not a big deal because I'll bet poor fido gets ignored far more often while your at work , playing video games or updating your facetard page ect ect ect .
So leaving my dog home alone is different than leaving him outside "animal cruelty" even? My dog would much rather be alone outside doing his thing than left home alone with our cat. Leaving your dog at the base of El Cap is one thing. If I want to bring my dog to a not so crowded crag for the day and I clean up after him that's my business. Get over it...

Crush 50 mg Benadryl mix with a piece of bread soaked in beer for potenting effect of Benadryl. For dogs over 30 pounds add a pinch of medical marijuana.

Seriously, that's a tad dramatic, my dog is my hiking buddy, camping buddy, riding buddy, and yes he chills at the crag with me? And yes he is very special I mean come on!

If the environment I am in is that sensitive I should probably not be there either.

I think it's only fair to share your medical marijuana with your dog. He is your buddy isn't he? So don't be stingy and spare a cookie for fluffy ' s nerves.

I regularly petition all land managers to forbid dogs from climbing areas.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
