I'm moving to Wyoming for the summer in Hyattville. I'll be a backcountry instructor so I'll have chunks of time off and want to get out and climb. I'll be living near Tensleep so I'll probably spend a lot of time there but would love to go to the Winds or Tetons at some point and do some longish trad peakbagging. I don't know anyone in WY so please hit me up if this sounds fun. I don't know my work schedule yet but as soon as I do I'm down for planning!

I won't be in WY this summer, but I have a word of advice, having taken various road trips around that state previously. If you are unable to arrange partners in advance, don't be too distraught; you'll be able to find partners pretty easily if you go to the right place. The last few years, Tensleep has had a very active summer scene, with lots of people hanging out for weeks at a time (during July/August) in the free camping area at the top of the old highway. You can go there by yourself, and if you are a competent climber who also has social skills, you will have not trouble finding climbing partners. The same is also somewhat true of the Tetons. The vast majority of alpine-type areas int he US you would not want to go to sans partner, but the Tetons are different thanks to the Teton Climber's Ranch. During high season (again, July/August), there are lots of climbers around, and finding a partner isn't too difficult. Staying there is a bit pricey, but very much worth it. Of course, some degree of caution is required in going alpine climbing with someone you just met, but I've found that a little bit of intuition about people will go a long way. Also, if you can't find a partner for any given day while in the Tetons, it is no big deal, since there are tons of fantastic solo-able 3rd and 4th class adventures in that range. Despite it's reputation as a climber's town, I've found that Lander is a bit more difficult a place to just roll in to and find a partner. It just isn't quite as in-vogue (crowded) as Tensleep these days, which is good if youlike quiet crags, but bad if you are solo and partnerless. And of course, you'll need to take a partner with you for the Winds.

I live 2 hrs east of Tensleep. I climb in the Bighorns, Winds, and Tetons. Let me know your planned dates and I'll tell you if I can make it. Always looking for new partners.

Indeed, breaking into the "local" climbing scene in Lander can be challenging, but if you camp at the park and spend a night or two at the lander bar you'll find others you can climb with. If you go during the week of the international climbers festival, partners will abound, and it's a great week. Lander is a super rad town.

Most everyone camps in the park...and everyone hangs at the Gannett/Lander Bar. W.I. Sports are indeed locals as well and always forth coming with beta and people to get out with. Good luck.
