You are basically right below Mt Erie, which is some pretty nice climbing. Not a ton of it, but theres a couple hundred routes to do. fun ones too. Theres also stuff in bellingham, and only a couple hours from Squamish or Liberty Bell climbs.

The nearest gym is probably Vertical World in Everett, it's ok, older style, short walls, homey feel, route setting is very erratic - sometimes awesome, sometimes horrible.
As was already said, Erie is right there. Index is probably the next closest crag, and I've heard that there are some nice sport climbing areas in Mount Vernon. For alpine Hwy 20 is the way to go, awesome granite at Washington Pass, adventure climbing out off Cascade River rd, sport climbing in Mazama.
in summer it's hard to beat the north cascades.

There are a couple of gyms in Bellingham but that's an hour away. Skagit Alpine Club is the local climbing club and has many members in Anacortes that you can link up with to climb.

I think everything else has been covered. Erie has 400+ routes and a new guide book came out last summer. There is another new guide book that covers Skagit county in general. Hwy 20 should keep you busy for a long time and Squamish is only 3 hours away.

Welcome to the area.

Hey David,

I got your email, I figured I'd put the info on the guide books here in case anyone else wants to find them too.

The new Erie guide is "Rockin' on the Rock; A Guide to Mt. Erie Climbing" by Dallas Kloke with Jim Thompson & Aaron Bryant.

The Skagit county guide is "Skagit County Crags (a Climbers Guide)" by Brandon Workman.

I think I picked them both up at the Erie General Store.

  • I couldn't remember my email/password combo so I "logged in with Facebook" and it didn't link accounts apparently, I don't care enough about it to figure it out now so I'm just going to go with it and have online chats with myself*

I'm moving East in 2 weeks, but just lived in Anacortes for a year. Erie is great in the summer, but I also had a membership at VITAL climbing gym in Bellingham. Great little bouldering gym complete with stationary bikes, free weights, campus board, slackline, open 24/7 to members, great laid-back atmosphere. 45 minute drive from Anacortes.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
