Rope comparison - Bluewater Icon vs. Wave

Hey all,

I'm looking at these two ropes. A lot of great reviews for the Icon online and the Wave got a huge thumbs up from Climbing Mag. I'm looking for a sport climbing redpoint cord (virtually zero toproping and I don't practice other climbing disciplines) but it will be used a fair amount, so durability is quite important. I've got a 10.2mm Bluewater that I love and will continue to use as my beast for the most part. But a fair amount of my climbing involves traveling without a ton of weight, so I want something that will allow me to leave the second rope at home. Does anyone have thoughts on either/both of these ropes?

I vaguely understand what sheath slippage, falls held, dynamic/static elongation, are and have no clue what impact force means. It looks like these have differences on all of these numbers so some guidance would be much appreciated. Also, other recommendations in the same price range for a 60m dry rope would be welcome!!!

I wouldn't base any gear decision on a thumbs up from Climbing. I'd also consider looking at non-dry ropes.

Buy Mammut instead. The Revelation (9.2) is a well-liked and durable skinny rope. On sale here:

I have the wave. It feels way more burly than the Icon.

The Wave just arrived in the mail yesterday, and while I've only just flaked it out and coiled it, it feels burly, more like a static line than a supple dynamic rope.

I own an Icon 70m. I only use it for leading ice so it doesn't see any abuse. I do know a well known guide in the Dacks that uses one at work everyday. You can't kill that rope!!

looking at getting either the Icon or Wave for multipitch rock. How are people liking their Wave's thus far, especially in comparison to the Icon?

The main significant difference in the stats I see is static elongation for the wave is 4.3%, Icon is 7.2%. wondering if this translates to the wave being stiffer handling? Is it too stiff, or just right?

thanks! Daniel

Someone above mentioned the wave feeling almost static. I ended up getting the Icon and really love it.

Glad to hear you like the icon. It's not too stretchy/saggy? I have a lighting pro, it's static elongation is 8.9%. I find it a bit more soft/stretchy than I would like...

I replaced my Beal Joker 70m with a BW Ion 70m and it has proven to be a much more durable rope.

I believe the only brand that does that is Mammut. But I could be wrong.

Also i've noticed the wave doesn't handle well in a grigri2. thats my only gripe about the rope.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
