Overtraining for older guys?

It's not that bad in the grand scheme of things. My medication has been figured out now so I'm all good.

I wish I could say the same.

Well it helps that my thyroid was irradiated so it's dead.

Chubby weigh in.

3/12/2014:
259 lbs, 29% BF, 48% hydration

Today:
254 lbs, 28% BF , 50% hydration

Cool Chad. This thread also sparked me to start losing weight. I was about 208 when the thread the thread started, today I'm about 203.

Started eating better and just focusing on cardio. Last Sunday my elbow got strained and it's fukered up, so that made it a no brainier that I'll be focusing on cardio for a few weeks.

Keep it going. Good job.

electronic body fat measurement are choss

They can be but so can caliper testing, it all depends on how the test is performed. Thanks for that insightful, well thought out reply though.

Then again if you use the electronic impedance method as a guide to track your progress it's pretty dang good.

Also it helps to:

1. Measure at the same time each day, in the morning before you eat or drink anything.

2. Follow the devices instructions. In my case it's to do it right out of the shower without drying your feet.

3. Stay hydrated / maintain the same level of hydration.

Common body fat measurement methods from most to least accurate:

Underwater weighing (aka water displacement weighing)
2.7% precision error

DXA Scan (Dual-emission X-ray absorptiometry)
3-5% precision error

Bioelectrical impedance
3% -8% precision error for a good device, following the guidelines above

Caliper Testing (aka skin fold test)
3% - 10% this is due to the quality of the calipers and the skill of person performing the test.

^ too long didn't read

just use a metric like hangboard on an edge for time. Then when you drop weight go back and measure your max hang time on the same edge. You will have improved. This is the only thing that matters to you as a climber.

What are you a bodybuilder?

I'd answer your question but it would probably be too long for you to read.

it's not really the precision that is the problem, it's the accuracy. i have an electronic scale with impedance BF% measurement. it is consistent, and the trends tend to follow what i see in the mirror, but it sure as hell doesn't spit out reasonably accurate numbers.

Wut?

Precision
the quality, condition, or fact of being exact and accurate

Accuracy
the quality or state of being correct or precise

He's saying they give repeatable measurements. E.g. they may be off by 10%, but will consistently be off by 10%, not wander all over like being 5% off one day and 10% off the next. So they are reasonable for tracking changes.

BTW, what happened to your weightlifting brags? The whole 300 bench 460 squat post?

I'm quite aware what Slim was trying to say; just poking fun at his word usage.

As for the 'weightlifting brags': I deleted it since it was in response to 5.samadhi and he can't read long posts.

He wanted to know if I used to be a bodybuilder and I let him know that I was into heavy weightlifting in college where it was all about how much weight you could move. I gave my bench and squat weights as an example of what I meant. The numbers aren't that impressive, 300 bench and 420 squat, especially for someone over 200 pounds.

precision of instruments relates to getting the same answer reliably every time from your scale.

accuracy of instruments relates to how close to the true value the instrument can get.

So let's say you weigh 150 lbs, but if your scale says 160, and will say 160 every time, it is precise, but not accurate.

Just a little science lesson... carry on

Good thing you weren't in the conversation then.

Dang blood sugar.

I've increased my activity and decreased my food intake but alas no weight loss this week. :(

I've been experiencing low blood sugar 2 plus times a day which I need to treat with around 200 calories of food each time.

I'll be meeting with my diabetic doc next week to get things under better control.

Bummer. :s

just go on a climbing dirtbag roadtrip. I've been having to drink white russians with heavy cream, ice cream, donuts, and stouts/porters just to try to keep on weight. I eat a pound of meat at night and lots of veggies and rice and bread. During the day I eat fig newtowns, apples, bananas, protein powder, fish oil, peanut butter sandwhiches, milk. I'm 5'7" and 135 now :/

just climb every day it will sort itself out.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
