Where can you camp near "The Pit" (flagstaff) when campgrounds aren't open?

Hoping to get down to The Pit this weekend. Sounds like the campground on location is gated and closed, so I'm looking for alternate camping areas that aren't terribly far away.

you could stay at priest draw, which is across the street then down the dirt road for ~3 miles.
