My girlfriend and I will be spending some time in Raton, NM. Is there any climbing in the area? We both lead sport and trad up to 5.10. Just would like to have a fun relaxing day. Also, are there any good places to eat? The place looks like such a hole, pardon my french.

I once spent 12 hours in Raton when a cross-country Amtrak train broke down. I recall eating an awful meal at Pizza Hut and then, upon asking what locals do for fun, we were offered some meth. Upon declining the meth, we were directed to an underground combination bar and archery range where you got a free beer with every quiver of arrows. We had about as good of a time as you can imagine. It went... okay.

This is the most widely known spot in the area:

Short routes but the climbing features trad routes on basalt (think tri-cams in horizontal slashes)...very fun. Unfortunately the gated road inside the state park is probably closed, which adds on a good amount of time to the approach.

As for good eats, we camped so I have no idea.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
