Last post was in August 2013 when the Callahans were closed for fire season. 2014 has been a great winter up there climbing above the valley fog. Access is open to drive in on weekends (Sat and Sunday), walk in from lower gate weekdays (Mon-Fri). For a place to pitch tents give me a call at 541.670.0412

Yes, generally gates close middle of March with a 30 to 40 minute walk-in from lower gate or a 30 to 45 min bike ride from Upper Gate depending on how much gear you choose to carry.

Was a leisurely 3/4 mile hike before they moved the lower gate. May be almost an even mile now. Just enough to get warmed up.

A note on the Hike into Acker Rock's Sunbowl and the start of the Peregrine Traverse. Someone has flagged the climber's trail and cleared all the down snags.

I'm new to Callahans as I've only been twice in 2014, but so far I love the area.
I went back in early January on a Monday and just last weekend on a Sunday. Both times the only gate there (the one where the road shifts from paved to gravel) has been open and I've been able to drive up all the way up to the trail head. Is there a schedule for when the gate is supposed to be open and closed or is it just on a case by case basis?

Also I know access can be sensitive on private property, so am I doing anything wrong by driving up to the touchstone trail head and parking off the road and out of the way? I wouldn't want to compromise the climber's relationship with Weyerhaeuser.

To clarify,
Weekends and holidays,(Saturday and Sunday) typically between October and March 15 gates are open to public access. You can drive all the way to the top of the ridge where there are three main trailheads leading down to climbing areas.

On weekdays (Monday-Friday) park at the Touchstone gate and hike in (aprox. 1 mile).

For the most complete information on Callahan trails and routes you can get a copy of "Western Oregon Rock Climbing, Umpqua" at While Away Books in Roseburg, Back Countrygear in Eugene, Ashland Outdoor Store, and NW Outdoor Store in Medford.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
