North Cheyenne Canon Rockfall?
I heard a rumor that there was some considerable rockfall in North Cheyenne Canon from the heavy rains... An estimated 50 tons of rock fell around the corner from Crack Parallel, and its buried part of the access trail? Can anyone substantiate this rumor or provide more details? I know the entrance has been closed due to the flooding, and we all know the chossy nature of the Canon, but I would love to learn more info! |
No access to the canyon, so we can't go check it out. I tried to drive in on Sunday and they had a police car with a road block. |
I wish I could answer your question. However, I do have some related photos of the Gold Camp and High Drive areas. Gold Camp Road washout: One of four washouts on High Drive: |

I live at the mouth of the Canon, and things are pretty tore up around here. They are not even giving a timeline for re-opening. I haven't heard about this rockfall, but now I'm supper interested....also I'm a ninja! ;) |
CRAP! Glad you posted. I was going to take my son up there this weekend to work his cleaning. |
An officer stationed at the CC entrance today said they may have the road open as early as tomorrow. |

They did not think the road was going to open soon. FEMA comes in to survey things tomorrow. I'm guessing they'll know more by early next week. Kelli, I've read that the Platte didn't get hit like the front range, and that things don't look too bad up there. May be headed up that way in the next few days. You're welcome to join us. |

I just a Gazette article saying that due to all the damge to the roads, the park is indefinitely closed :( |
The Splatte was good Saturday as far as Sheeps Nose... No road issues at all coming down from Pine Junction. |
Finally got up there a few minutes ago and checked in with the cop stationed at the gate. He said it was supposed to open today, but should be opening up tomorrow. Whether this info is reliable... not sure. The main issue sees to be fixing roads. I asked about the rockfall, but the officer didn't know. He said even once the road opens up, trails may remain closed until the Parks and Rec people can get in and assess damage. Currently, it sounds like just the city's D.O.T. is working on the roads. |

Within the links below are video footage of the damage. |

Man, with Old Stage Road closed indefinitely (the road near the Broadmoor Stables washed out), and North Cheyenne Canon closed for a good long time, where is a climber to go for some local granite climbing? Guess we will all have to flock to the goodness that is the South Platte. Turkey is lovely this time of the year. |
Get acquainted with eleven mile. |
I'm well acquainted with 11mile, just not crazy about the fee. I still think the Platte is where its at, but will likely be overrun with climbing from the northern Front Range this fall. |

Since conditions are being discussed, how is access to Red Rock Canyon Open Space? I'm thinking about spending the weekend down there in about two weeks. |

The parking lot was packed yesterday around 4:30 pm while driving back into town on Hwy 24. |

I was at RRCOS friday. The lake/dam is full and the climbing was good. The trails are a bit washed out, but no problem for climbing folk. |
