Rifle Police now patrolling Rifle Mountain Park

FYI: as of last week Rifle Police have started patrolling the canyon on weekends. They are writing tickets for parking violations, driving without a seatbelt, speeding, & have even pulled over a few people to test for DUIs if they were seen drinking a beer before getting in their car or having an open container in the car while driving. Also, they're ticketing dog owners who don't keep their pooch on a leash & let it run around making a ruckus.

I posted this in the Rifle Mountain Park section but thought I'd put it here to get the word out. It's time to play by the rules people.

EDITED to clarify that the patrols are happening on weekends.

On BOTH days!!! Crap, guess I can no longer be the drunk, negligent dog owner parking in the handicap spot while warming up on 5.13c....time to move to Vegas, they still have 7 days in the week.

That sucks! I wonder if this is a result of one of the meth heads breaking into and stealing the campsite fees a couple of weeks ago? If the police need something to do maybe they should focus more on the crystal meth problems in town (you know...weekend...paycheck..big nights of hard drugg'n) instead of taking a nice relaxing drive into the park harassing good people having a good time in the woods. I wonder if they are going to site the local ranchers for driving twice the posted speed limit whilst in the middle of the road hauling a trailer? I'm sure they wont harass those good ole boys which, ironically, is the biggest threat to safety in the canyon. Maybe it is more lucrative for the city to extract money from those who have it than to burden their own judicial system with meth heads that don't have any money to take.

...aahhhh, ok done bitch'n

From what I saw last weekend & from what others have said to me the police are not focused on any specific user group. I personally saw them signaling for trucks hauling ATVs & animals to slow down. I do know that the city of Rifle views climbers as the user group in the canyon causing the most negative impact. Whether or not they're right isn't the point. I think we should focus on our own behavior instead of trying to shift the blame to other user groups.

That is an interesting idea

There is a new police chief in Rifle this year and he wants his staff to treat RMP like the city park that it is. The police have been patrolling off and on all season and now it appears they are back in earnest, perhaps because of the pay station vandalism. The police are spreading the love equally across all user groups and they were super supportive during the climber's festival.

As an fyi, it is sounding like the 2 tents / 2 car limit at campsites is likely to be enforced soon. Just remember, RMP is a city park that is owned by the city of Rifle and is not the back woods somewhere.

We got busted on that this past weekend. We had 3 cars and 4 tents at one site. The guy was nice about it and only asked that we submit an extra envelope for the additional people (i.e. pay $14 a night to camp instead of $7) but that could've just been a one-time exception. Personally that's an acceptable solution and much better than the alternative of sending people away or splitting a group into two campsites that are potentially non-adjacent (or not available).

Wasn't suggesting that they were targeting climbers, we have had a good relationship with the city from what I can see. I just meant that there are better priorities than to spend tax payer dollars on honest people trying to relax on a weekend and the meth problem out there seems to be what they should be focusing on.

Cheers

I liked it when the old police chief in the 90's would come and hang out with us, shoot the shit and invite people to go fishing with him. Good people!

You aren't an outlaw UNLESS you're breaking the law. Follow the posted rules and you have NO problems. Scofflaws will be punished.
