Bad times in Idyllwild

Well, both good and bad. Some great climbing with a friend, but...
We camped out at one of the yellow post sites near the south ridge trail. A good 100 yards from another campsite, nobody around. 10 oclock, I'm headed to bed when a voice and light in my eyes demands to know why I'm "in his campsite?" Wow. A quite aggressive guy, apparently a lone climber, as he was still wearing his BD haulbag of stuff. No vehicle. We end up in a disagreement, swearing etc., but no shoving or anything like that. I figured it was done.

Coming down from the hail and lightening after pitches on Tahquitz, I find not one, but all four of my tires flat.

Yup, this dude held a grudge... found my truck and slashed all 4 tires.

I figure that if I'm really an A-hole, someone would have slashed my tires long ago during my 40+ years. First time this has happened. Hopefully the last.

So, heads up if you rough it in the wilds of Idyllwild lately: don't camp too close to the unstable carless guy who's been up there for months. He's a little protective of his privacy.

Gnarly dude. What did this guy look like? Are you involving p.d.?

Didn't get a good look at him last night... white guy with short brown (black?) hair. Maybe glasses. Living alone in his hobo encampment. Put up a screen house next to the firepit.

An unstable M-Fer, in my slim, misspelled book.

And I did file a report, oh yes.

I was out there today and after that storm that's the last thing I would've wanted to hike down to. I'm guessing that was what the tow truck was up there for?

Karma is a bitch...especially when youre a climber...bummer man

Yeah, right? We got up to the 4th pitch of Edgehogs with the hail starting, hastily simulrapped down through huge raindrops, and got to the base with rivers coming off the rock. And ample lightning to add more poop to my pants.

It was totally impressive and amazing to witness the great waterfalls pouring down. Like "holy hell, this is awesome and $hitty at the same time!"

A muddy, slippery deproach it was... and then the tires. Yup, had to have it flatbedded to town and buy a whole new set.

If ANYONE knows the name of the guy up there who's been camping in the forest land site for weeks/months.. I would be most grateful to acquire that info. Or any information about him.

I would camp in the exact same spot next weekend. With a baseball bat.

I was David's partner, and the exchange they had at the camp site was concerning enough for me to get out of my tent to offer backup if the need arised (doubtful - David's pretty strong), but in no way had any undertones of "unfinished business" and definitely didn't warrant 4 slashed tires. By the time I got my ass out of bed, the exchange was over. I have never seen the likes of this before, and I live in Victorville which is super ghetto.

The only good part of the rest of that day was the offered help of some of the good hearted locals. I still can't believe someone could be that much of a bitch - to go behind your back and slash tires. Wow.

ya... i'd go back camp where u were with some 'protection' and a fu*kin crew.

Sounds like u know where the asshole is camped out, no? Why not go up to his site and get your 'money's worth' out of him or his equipment? Wild Wild West, right?

Definitely bad advise to go mess him up.
Better Idea would be to tell the police that you know where he is camping and roll over to the site with the cops.

Of course you guys are right. 4 tires on a truck cost $1000 and a tow is probably another 200.

He's likely to get a $500 ticket that he won't pay because he's an unstable carless guy.

If you want to get philosophic about it, most likely he would not be a carless unstable guy if the universe had served him well, so you're already ahead.

I'd still like to get backwoods on him.

Nicelegs -you def have my permission to whallop, if you wish!

I really just want to distance myself from this wacko...

Plus, I have notified the po-po and rangers about this incident, so if I bring my mad ninja/Shaft/Pei Mei skills up there, well... Assault is still assault, I reckon.

I prefer my home to not be the San B County lockup.

I hope he moves on and stays away from my truck in the future.

But thanks for the well-meaning thoughts, y'all!

Woah, sorry to hear about this incident I've been camping up there all year and have never had an issue, I've only met other nice people, however when it gets dark up there and your by yourself I've gotten a little nervous about weirdos, so if this dude shined a light in my face I would've freaked. Out of curiosity where were u camped? If it had a yellow stake sounds like you were all the way at the top by the boulders?

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
