Bryan McClung (Chestnut Creek Campground)

The owner of Chestnut Creek Campground in WV, Bryan McClung passed away last Sunday.

WV Gazette wrote:Bryan McClung, 57, of Lansing, died Aug. 11, 2013. Celebration of life will be held at 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at McClung Family Farm, 710 Asbury Methodist Church Road, Asbury (call 304-445-6432 for directions) and 5 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, at Chestnut Creek Campground, Lansing. Wallace & Wallace Funeral Home, Lewisburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Rest in peace, Bryan. I always enjoyed my stay at Chestnut.

Total bummer! That guy could be a harda$$ at times, but he kept that campground from being the $hit show that was Roger's Rocky Top Retreat. I always tried to stay at Roger's, but I knew when it was overcrowded that I was going to have a quiet stay at Chestnut's.
Rest in Peace Bryan and condolances to the family and friends.

Bryan was a good guy who ran a very nice campground. Climbing at the New won't be the same without him. Rest in peace, Bryan.

I just stayed there and had no clue. So sad, I wish I had known to express my condolences. Great campground and it is still being taken care of well. We met Desiree, who was very nice also.

I liked that quirky guy so much, he ran a good business.

I had a conversation with Brian, two Saturdays ago, about the future of Chestnut Creek. I certainly did not expect this. Brian always ran a tight ship. Despite what some may read on the interwebz about his antics, he was a great guy. My condolences to his family and friends.

Life is short. Enjoy it while it lasts.

I stayed at Chestnut Creek about 40-50 nights a year, every year for the past 5+ years. I had become decent friends with Bryan, so I'm very sad to hear this news. Over the past year I was aware he was having some health problems, although he never got too specific about them. I was just hoping it was something that would pass.

Many people saw him as overly strict, but thats what made his campground so great. It was a place I could get sleep at night and look forward to clean bathrooms and hot showers.

He'll be missed.

Bryan was a great guy. We stayed there every weekend for years. He always kept a good site available for us and we looked forward to chatting with him as he made his rounds at night. He even shared some moonshine with my wife and danced the Irish jig with her while checking in one night! Now that I'm now longer in the area, I miss having a great place like that to spend the nights after climbing. I'm very glad to have had the chance to see him one more time last fall when we returned home for a trip. Rest in Peace Buddy.

Damn...I loved that guy. Stayed there whenever we went there because he kept such a nice campground (he cared about it). It seemed like he had a lot of rules to most people, but 99% of them were just common decency things such as not washing your pots/pans in the bathroom sinks, flushing the toilet, and cleaning up your trashy campsite. Remember him roping me into moving his washer and drier one morning before climbing...gave us a couple of days free for helping him. Loved his golf cart that backfired all the time and would drive off without him when he got out of it too...always good for a laugh watching him chase after it.

Chestnut Creek was one of the best campgrounds I've stayed it. With all the traffic it got, it still had a lot of dense vegetation and a natural feel that wasn't in proportion to the number of people who came through. He could be gruff sometimes, but I don't see how someone could have kept a campground in the condition he did any other way. I stayed there for a lot of years, and in my mind, he was a part of the New River climbing experience. I'm going to miss him.
